Cemeteries in Falkirk Town Centre

Post by Pandabean » Mon Dec 11, 2006 1:40 pm

I have been studying Old Maps of Falkirk town centre and it appears that there may be a hidden (out of sight from the main road) graveyard down the Cow Wynd. In the 1800's it used to be the South United Presbrytarien Church. From the present day OS town plan there is a similar building with a similar sized plot of land.

Thought I would just let people know in case they hadn't noticed it before.

Also there was another graveyard where the present day Callender Shopping Centre is. It was part of the East U.Pb Church and from what I can see it was built over when the Shopping Centre was built. What would have happened to these bodies?

I think that is the "Tattie Kirk" churchyard. It is still there, but most of the stones are old and weathered.

All the best,

AndrewP - Yup it is, just found it on the net.

I have never been in there myself but I might do at one point just out of curiosity and personal interest.

Hi Andy,

Yes, both you and AndrewP are correct, it is the Tattie Kirkyard.

It now had a beautiful six foot wooden fence round it and the only way in is by a path which runs round the back of one of the shops. The shop is a kind of Christian Bookshop type place and has a tearoom attached (I can't for the life of me remember what it's called)

Do you know where Mathiesons Bakery is? At the back of the High Street?
If you are parked there and head through the lane towards the High Street, this shop is on the left hand side, behind the snack-van at the car park and to the left of the Strathcarron Charity Shop. It's a new building, you can't miss it.

The only way you can get into the Churchyard is during the opening hours of the shop as they hold the key to the only gate.

The Tattie Kirk itself is still there, you've probably passed it a thousand times and never noticed it - I know I did. It's now privately owned and I think is used as storage for a joinery or similar type business.

There's maybe only around 30 stones left but depending on the time of day you go and depending if it's sunny, the inscriptions are mostly all legible.

Hi
Just read your thoughts on Tattie Kirk. There is a booklet available at least from local libraries with the grave inscriptions from this chuchyard. Its called Calatria [or similar  ] and I think it is done through Falkirk History Society.
The church that used to be under what is now Callendar Square Shopping centre....I was lead to believe most of the stones were taken out to the Camelon cemetary, but this could just be local hearsay!
I worked in Callander Square when it first opened........alot of the girls used to say it was haunted because of the lifting of bodies. I have to say, on the main areas you never thought about it, but some of the "back corridors" for staff only were so creepy..........put it this way, I wouldnt go unless with another person lol
I am sure Camelon cemetery staff can tell you if this is correct or not......just give them a ring!

searching for Jacks, Williamsons, Maxwells, Wardlaws, Hardies, Bennies, Kays, Bruce, Sneddon, Dougall and Galloway all mainly Polmont and Muiravonside areas - basically all families from Polmont!!

Sorry to jump on this subject but my grandmother Janet Finlayson Dawson died at Booth Place, Falkirk in 1926, could you tell me which Churchyard she would be buried in.
I only found out a short while ago that she was my Grandmother and I would love to see her grave on our next visit back home.

Try an e-mail to Falkirk Library. See if they can check the local newspapers (Falkirk Herald) for a funeral notice that would give a burial place.

Or the cemetery records office at Camelon. I believe thay have computer indexed all of their records.

Hi Maggie,

When you get a reply from the Cemetery Records Office of where your Granny is buried, (more than likely to be one of the Cemeteries rather than a Churchyard), post the details of which Cemetery and if you include Section and Lair numbers, I'll go along, find out if there's a stone and take a few wee photos for you.

If there's no stone, I could hopefully pinpoint exactly where the grave is and get exact directions for you for your next visit. (Unless like me, you're quite happy to spend hours wandering round anyway!!)

Thanks AndrewP I have e-mailed Cemetery Records Office but I am not expecting a reply until the new year.

Thank you very much for the offer Anne for photo's, once I get the location of my grandmothers burial place I will certainly let you know. I enjoy spending many hours wandering round cemetaries.

Falkirk Graveyards

I have had replies from both sites but they could not find any records for my grandmother. My ggrandmother has been a puzzle for me this is the info I have.

On the death of cert Janet Finlayson Dawson her parents are given as John Lando deceased and Margaret Finlayson deceased.
Janet Finlayson Dawson was the illegitimate daughter of Margaret Finlayson before she married, her name at birth was Margaret Finlayson Kerr.
She also had an illegitamate son my grandfather John Lando Kerr.

Can anyone suggest where else I should look.
