What's this name??
I've uploaded a photo in the hope that someone can figure out what this man's surname is.

Initially I thought it was POBLERTON, but then when I compared the capital 'P' with the P of Rubilsaw Park - it's not the same.
Then I thought . . . FOBLERTON, nope, not that either. I think the third letter is a 'u', similar to the 'u' of Rublislaw.
A posh way of spelling Fullerton (Foulerton) maybe?
I had a look on SP but couldn't find anything, so any suggestions . . . . ?

Hi Anne,
As hard to believe as it seems, SP has him as Thomas Foulerton, so the first letter is an F but if you look closely at the third letter, it isn't closed as a b would be. The elongated first up stroke is what has confused things.

Jings - so it is Mary - obvious when you know exactly what it is!
I've spent hours looking for his wife's death . . . . she was Agnes Foulertoun, maiden name Salter and died 19th September 1861 aged 30, but there doesn't seem to be any sign of her on SP.
I did wonder about the age gap between them but unless she was the wife of Thomas's son who was also a Major General .........?

Only a theory, but a Major General would have had a fairly high social standing in those days and his choice of wife would be driven as much by the availability of ladies of similar quality for him to marry, as hers would have been by the need to "marry well". Young women of quality, while often costing a lot in terms of a dowry, were assets to be used to increase the family's social standing.
It's also not beyond the realms of possibility that she wasn't his first wife.

Andrew & Jean - I didn't find that entry - I don't know why I'm not finding things this afternoon! It might be something to do with me always entering her maiden name
It is indeed Logie, I've been back and forward a few times to different stones in this Churchyard - there's quite a lot of trees around it which doesn't make life very easy when your trying to take photos and you've got to be here just at the right time for the sun to hopefully cast shadows in the right direction! (If the sun decides to come out at all that is!)
Thanks to everyone for replying.
Anne.
P.S. A wee bit of a coincidence - my maiden name is Fullerton!!
