Nellfield Cemetery pictures

Post by speleobat2 » Mon Apr 30, 2007 10:41 pm

If everything works, I just posted two pictures of Nellfield Cemetery that might be of interest. One is of my great grandfather's family site and memorial plaque taken after my great grandmother was buried in 1915. This was made into a postcard which I'm not sure that I would want to get in the mail. The other was taken a few days ago by Colin Milne of NE Scotland for which my sister and I have sent a million thanks. The plaque is the fourth one from the right and in remarkably good condition given it's age. We really appreciate the chance to see it today since getting over there isn't going to be possible any time soon.

Hi Carol
Thanks for sharing this with us. You must be thrilled that the stone is still there and in good condition.
This was made into a postcard which I'm not sure that I would want to get in the mail.
It does seem a strange picture to put on a postcard, but maybe the postcards were made as keepsakes rather than for expressing "wish you were here"!!

Best wishes
Lesley

Lesley,

Yes, we were pretty happy to see the stone was still there and readable! On the postcard: I guess it makes sense because I don't think that snapshots as we know them were around then and everyone communicated by writing. (Imagine that!) Also, there is a whole category of collecting to do with funerary items made for rememberances. But still, I can remember what a jaw dropper it was when I came across the funeral book from my mother's youngest brother, openned it and found myself looking a picture of him in his coffin! This was from 1940.

Archiver,

Thanks for the confirmation of the Aberdeen archives email address. It will have to wait until the budget permits.

The sunny day in the Nellfield picture had my sister headed for the airport!

Of course, she lives near the shore of Lake Superior--next stop Canada--and gets close to 300 inches of snow a year.

Carol, I wonder if you might be interested in this - I came across it in a burial register for St Nicholas Cemetery in Aberdeen:

Buried 14 December 1824 Janet Clerihew, Ressidenter (sic)

Unfortunately, that was all the detail given - no next of kin, no lair or anything. As far as I know, a ressidenter or residenter just means an inhabitant of long standing. But I thought it might be of use, given that Clerihew is quite an unusual name!

Also, there is an old MI list for St Nicholas which gives the following:

Section D
Mary Richardson, d. 18 Dec 1823 age 52. Wife of Francis Clerihew, builder, Aberdeen, d. 18 Dec 1839 age 92. George Clerihew, son, builder, Aberdeen, d. 25 Sept 1859 age 77. Margaret Dundas Richardson, wife of the above George Clerihew, d. 10 March 1862 age 80.

Maybe these are some of yours?!

A million thanks for the St. Nicholas cemetery listings!

There seem to be 5 or 6 groups of Clerihews around Scotland and one in England. The builder Clerihews are one family group. I haven't been able to tie them directly to my family. Actually, I haven't been able to tie my family to any one group, but it's looking like they are from some where around Alford, Oyne, etc. and moved to Aberdeen.

Janet Clerihew is definitly worth investigating. I have several birth records from the mid and late 1700's with only the fathers names on them and Janet is a new female Clerihew to me so maybe I can match her up with a family.

I really appreciate hearing from you on this because these records aren't available to me online and I haven't wanted to spend the money on official requests for lair locations etc. just yet. Unless the Nellfield records go online, I'm going to have to spend the money soon though. I think that's where my relatives mostly are.

Hi Carol

I live just down the road from Nellfield so if you get a location for any more of your rellies let me know and I'll have a look for them for you. It's a big cemetery though and directions to the grave in question are required.

Hi Anne,

Thanks again! I'm going to work on this over the weekend. Hopefully I can get a location on my great great grandmother Sophia Chalmers Clerihew's gravesite. I have a death certificate on her, but I've never been able to pull up one for her husband George. If she is in Nellfield, chances are the rest of the family is there too. I'll get back to you as soon as I find out something.

Hi again Anne,

I just heard back from the Aberdeen City archives about my 2x great grandmother's gravesite. It turns out that the Clerihews are probably buried in St. Peter's, not Nellfield. They weren't able to locate my 2x great grandmother, but they did find a George Clerihew who is probably her husband.

Thanks again for your generous offer to look up the gravesite and take a picture! Maybe I can take you up on it sometime in the future with another relative.

Great that you found a rellie Carol. St Peter's is just at the other end of town so let me know if there's anything I can do.
