Silverbanks Street, Cambuslang

Post by ASGROOMBRIDGE » Wed May 09, 2007 9:36 pm

I am planning a wee trip up north for a couple of day's next week, my first stop is Westburn Cemetery, Cambuslang and thought I might try and find the street where my mother was born in but cant seem to find it on my road map or on the disc that I have, does anyone know if Silverbanks Street in Cambuslang still exists and is it anywhere near Westburn Cemetery.

Thanks,
Audrey

Hi Audrey
Found this link on an "Old Cambuslang" forum:
http://pub21.bravenet.com/forum/1773195 ... ch/698161/
Pretoria Street was at the southern end of Silverbanks Street, and ran parallel to Glasgow Road. It had only two closes - one on either side of and round the corner from Silverbanks Street. Pretoria Street looked out onto the old quarry and across to Dukes Road, and in the other direction, about 100 yards away, down Silverbanks Street across Glasgow Road and through the railway yard and over the railway line was the Hoover factory.
You can see Silverbanks Street on this older map here:

Hope this is of some help. I rather suspect from there being no current mentions of Silverbanks Street on the web that it has either been renamed or is perhaps not there today, but Bothwell street, also on the above map, does still appear to exist, so that may help you find the right area.

I'm told the cemetery is to the north east of here, about a mile away.
Best wishes
Lesley

I don't know Cambuslang at all (although all my fathers family are from there) but I do drive through it quite a lot. Looking at the map I'm pretty sure it's all new flats/houses in the area of Silverbanks.

Westburn is a five minute drive away from Silverbanks.

On the maps of 1890s to 1930s on www.old-maps.co.uk the area behind the arrow on the current map given above by Lesley is Silverbanks Quarry. I searched the various maps there and I saw no sign of a Silverbanks Street, but it must have been in that immediate area going by the description in Lesley's quote.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Lesley,

That looks like a section of some of the maps I was looking at on the old-maps site, but if they were named on any of thses maps, the writing was illegible. That map looks to be newer than the newest one on old-maps (1934) as it shows the edge of the Hoover factory that was not on the maps I saw.

Salvia Street shown on the current map seems to be in much the same place as Pretoria Street was.

All the best,

Andrew

Thaks everyone, especially for the old maps site, I had a feeling it might no longer be there, will still have a look at the area. This is one of those trips that will go in my family tree book and my poor husband knows me well enough to bring a large box of hankies for the trip to Westburn, I love doing all this research but finding the wee one's that had so short lives is very hard, we are so lucky that times are not so hard today. I keep thinking of my poor Grandmother and how sad she must have been to loose two little one's before they were a year old and within two years of each other. As I know she never returned to Cambuslang after she left in 1923 I expect this is the first family visit to the grave since then.

Thanks again everyone,
Audrey
