Yet another brickwall
I have a John McGavin's death record (born abt 1808, Mauchline, Ayrshire):
"GROS Death: John McGavin, Under-forester (widower of Isabella Hamilton), died 5.15pm 6th February 1883 at Marshalls Haigh, aged 76yrs. Father: William McGavin, Blacksmith (dec’d), mother: Jean McGavin nee McCrone (decd). Cause: Heart disease, informant Andrew McGavin, son (present)"
I'm trying to find the death of his mother Jean/Jane McCron/McCrone.
The family lived Haugh, Mauchline and as well as John there were children christened in Mauchline under McGaan: Elizabeth McGaan 1810 (parents William McGaan and Jean McCron), Mary McGaan 1812 (parents William McGaan and Jean McCrone) and William McGaan 1815 (parents William McGaan and Jean McCron).
On the 1841 census the only John McGavin born abt 1808 that I can find is one the following census:
Haugh, Mauchline, Ayrshire
William McGavin, 59, 1782, Blacksmith, Ayrshire
Margaret McGavin, 47, 1794, Ayrshire
John McGavin, 33, 1808, Ayrshire
James McGavin, 16, 1825, Ayrshire
Robert McGavin, 14, 1827, Ayrshire
Andrew McGavin, 11, 1830, Ayrshire
Hannah McGavin, 6, 1835, Ayrshire
George McGavin, Ayrshire
There is a marriage in 22/10/1824 Mauchline for William McGavin to Margaret Merry and the children listed after John on the 1841 census are all on IGI as children of William McGaan and Margaret Merry.
The fact that John is listed above the couple's children make me beleive that he is also the son of William (assuming that if a different family member, they're usually listed after the couples children)
This makes me think that William has remarried after the death of his first wife, Jean McCrone/McCron. Since William McGaan jnr was christened in 1815 and William appears to remarry in 1824 then I've been looking for burials or death records between these dates. But on the transcribed Mauchline records I've found this period is missing.
I can't find a will for William McGavin (snr) (this would have hopefully shown all the children from both marriages and confirmed my theory) or Jean/Jane.
I may have a burial record for William McGaan, Smith, Haugh buried 09/01/1848 Mauchline - but since it's pre statutory requirements there's no details about his spouses or children.
I don't feel I can be 100% certain that William remarried after Jean's death unless I find a death record/burial for Jean, or a will/death record for William which shows his two wifes & two sets of children.
The marriage record for William to Margaret doesn't give details of whether he was a widower, which is a shame.
So then...does anyone have any ideas of where I can look now, please?
Have I missed something? Does anyone agree with my theory about John on the 1841 census, as him being William's son?
Thanks very much,
Paula
