photos from graveyards

Post by laineywoo » Wed May 23, 2007 9:57 pm

Hi everyone..
This may seem a very strange thing to ask...but at the risk of sounding dense!, is there a site anywhere or something that we could use on TS to help each other, just, showing graveyard photos from anywhere and all places in Scotland, and if not could TS do something like this?? I have taken loads of photos from Polmont, Muiravonside, Larbert, Stenhousemuir, Bathgate to name just a few, and have ended up sending them worldwide to help people. Its lovely to be able to help folks, and I obviously mean freely without charge!!! I note there are a few of us from this area alone that do this regularly and so assume it will be the same in most places. This would also allow a few of us from same areas to meet up occasionally.
I have to assume that someone already asked something along these lines but couldnt see anything on the boards.
What do you think? Can it be done?

Hi Lainy
Interesting proposition!
There is certainly a site which provides links to such projects,
http://www.scottishgraveyards.org.uk/index.shtml
and there is a Scottish National Death & Burial Index in progress, undertaken by S.A.F.H.S. with the various Scots FHS and GROS, the aim being to index all recorded pre-1855 deaths and burials in Scotland.
http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/content/projects.aspx?

But neither of those are quite what you have suggested! You could always put up your own website, perhaps inviting others to contribute - I'm sure TS would be happy to link to it - I'm always on the lookout for sites with MI/grave info to add to our collection! :D

grave yard photos

Post by laineywoo » Wed May 23, 2007 11:19 pm

Hi Lesley
Glad you thought it at least of interest. I read your reply and went away and had a wee think. Obviously, the main problem in doing this would be space.....photos take up a heck of a lot of room on the computer.
So, what about.........this is supposing it is of interest to anyone out there???, I do some sort of spreadsheet, listing each name alphabetically, followed by date of death, approx date of birth, where buried and a ref number made up for each photo. The only way I can think of from there is if anyone wants to add, they either send me photos, or add to the sheets with their email addresses.......that way anyone interested in any particular photo can just let the person or me know, and we can forward the pics onto interested parties..
My next question though.........would I be breaking any rules or regs anywhere along the way? I dont really see how, as no-one can stop you photographing a grave yard that I know of!, but at the same time, would hate to offend anyone in the process. Some folks on my photos, died after the dates allowed to download death certs for example, so would this be in breach of anything? Any lawyer types out there who would know?
From experience, I know that these graves can often help people more than the older ones that give little info. It certainly seems to aid folk who can't get through to Edinburgh to get the info for themselves.....of course it would be kind of pot luck as to how lucky they are in finding the person they are looking for!
I'll wait to hear what the rest of you think.......no point dwelling before hearing if anyone thinks it worthwhile
Cheers just now

Hi Lainy
What a wonderful idea, certianly helps those who live far away (like me).
We have 2 sites in Ontario that are being done by volenteers. I too have contributed from my visits home.
If you would like a look as to how they did it here are two sites.
Also handy for finding our scottish rellies that came to Canada. I have found dozens of folks that moved from their original homesteads.

Hi Lainey,

I have a personal website in which I'm hosting what I have on my own family tree. It's quite a task as I've decided against using any genealogy plug-ins so I have free reign in it's creation.

It started off as a general Scottish genealogy site in which I was kindly sent some photos to host and I still have these. These where related to places of interest and included cemetries. My intention is still to re-introduce this section on my personal site so if you are looking for somewhere to host them maybe I can help you out with either hosting them there or giving you a hand to host your own.

If you are interested then I can upload some of the previous stuff to let you have a look.

Cheers

graveyard photos

Hi Izzy and Rab
Thanks for your suggestions. I think I will go ahead with this....Izzy the sites you mentioned gave me quite a few good ideas! It may take a wee while to get sorted through, but maybe once I have abt 20 photos up, I will start it then and just add as I get a chance.
I was kind of hoping that it would be of interest to more folks, but figure that if I find it interesting enough that will do lol. So long as it helps one person I'll be quite happy.......just seems a shame not to be able to share.
Many thanks again, I'll let you know how it comes on.

Hi:)

I was fortunate enough to purchase booklets for MIs in South Pershire as well as Dunbarney/ New Kirk. The booklets cleared up for me the inscriptions on some stones that are relavent to my tree, tho its unfortunate that the names of 3 that died in infancy are not inscribed but just mentioned that there were 3 infants.
Viewing the photos, that were very unexpectedly taken and emailed to me and for which I am most greatful, is a profound validation of what I once read 'you live as long as you are remembered, you die only when you are forgotten'.

Hi Lainey

Kenny Monaghan does something similar to what you're suggesting; for Ayrshire.

He might have some advice for you based on his own experience.
