MIs Auld Kirkyard in Selkirk

Post by CatrionaL » Tue Jun 26, 2007 7:38 pm

Those with ancestors in and around SELKIRK in the Scottish Borders may be interested in a new CD which has been produced only recently.

It contains the photos and transcriptions of all the gravestones in the Auld Kirk Yard. It has maps of the Kirkyard for 1961 and 2006, with lair plans and owners. A list of emigrants from Selkirk to various parts of the world from 1850 - 1865 is included, as are photos of the town war memorial and transcriptions of the names on it.

It can be ordered from alanATalanturnbull.com at a cost of £10 + 55p postage and packing. Proceeds from the sale of the CD go to the Selkirk Regeneration society which helps towards the upkeep of the churchyard.

The Auld Kirkyard has at least two claims to fame. Firstly it was on the site of the Auld Kirk that William Wallace was proclaimed Protector of Scotland. Secondly, the direct ancestors of Franklyn Roosevelt on his mother's side, the Murrays, are buried there.

Best wishes

Hi Catriona
That is great news for those with families in that area. Its wonderful to see more and more information of this kind becoming available like this - quite exciting really! And good to know that the proceeds are put back into helping with the preservation of the churchyard.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley

Yes it is encouraging to see how much is becoming available. In Selkirk the photographing and transcription of the main cemetery is now well under way too.

Best wishes

Hi Dawn

I'm so glad you decided to take the plunge and join in on TS.
There are a couple of posters from the Borders area so throw a couple of questions their direction.
Some of us may sound slightly mad but we're not really, we just enjoy the good company on the site.

I hope your CD is as much help as the one I got from the Fife family history group. It filled in quite a few gaps. A picture of the stone is even better.

Thanks Russell,
I'll post on here when it comes and let you all know what it's like. I joined the Borders Family History Society about 2 months ago thinking i would maybe get abit of info from them but all i have had is a letter stating that i am a member and a membership number, they don't even answer my e-mails that i've sent requesting a lookup, i have payed for my membership as well.

Hi all,
I have the CD of the graveyard and have to say it's really really well done, i've found about 3 headstones so far. Highly recommended to anyone that wants to buy it.
