Glasgow burials database to go online

Post by Chris Paton » Tue Jun 26, 2007 9:13 pm

Hi all,

I was in the Mitchell earlier and overheard a genealogy class being told that all the burial registers held at the Mitchell are being transcribed onto a database which is supposed to go online on the 27th of this month, though someone in the group raised the issue about a payment gateway problem possibly causing a delay. The plan is that it will become available through the Glasgow City Council website, and that whilst some of the registers are transcribed, others are still in progress.

Does anyone know any more about this?

Chris

Hi Chris
I'd not heard about this project but it sounds like an exciting advance, which will be a such a huge help to so many people researching their families. Look forward to hearing more...! :D

Best wishes
Lesley

The librarian talking to the group who mentioned it started by saying "And I have an exclusive for you...", whilst one of the group, who I assume works for the council, mentioned the possible payment gateway problem. My impression from the conversation was that some of it was to go online at first, and the rest, currently being transcribed, will join soon after.

I know - I just wish they would also do something with their poor law records though, they are falling to bits, and yet are such a valuable resource!

That would really be great. Not all of us can get to the Mitchell so having online access, even at cost, would be beneficial.

It would be great if they could do something with the poor law records too. Maybe this is just the start of it though- I hope so.
