Dundee Howff

Post by Pamela » Fri Jul 06, 2007 10:15 am

 Hi. Is anyone able to photograph a headstone at the old dundee Howff. The grave I am after is that of Robert Robertson died 1808. Also on the headstone are his wife Christian Drummond, 2nd wife Agnes Couper, niece Margaret Dunn, wife of thomas, plus their infant daughter.
The stone was erected by his son Robert and daughter Margaret.
I would be very grateful for any help. Cheers Pamela :)

Hi Pamela

There are images of gravestones in Dundee Howff at http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/howff/main.htm

Might be worth a look - just in case!

Hello Pamela,

Hopefully somebody will oblige but meanwhile I will PM you the email address of the person who managed the Dundee Howf site.
It's a shame it's not active any longer it was a great site.

Kind regards,
Annette M

hi Pamela
...and welcome to TalkingScot :D

I contacted Dundee Archives about the web site which used to have all the photos of the Howff as I was sure they would know something about it. This is what I was told:
This site is regrettably no longer able to be supported by its server and has been in abeyance for, I think, about 6 months (and the URL appears to have been taken over by an intrusive site) . Darren Eyers, whose site it is, is hoping to get it back up and running in the near future but I have heard nothing definite about this as yet.
So it looks like it may be back online at some point.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Pamela. I didn't see your post until yesterday. I'm sorry you've had a bit of a wait! However, I live in Dundee so my husband and I popped into town this afternoon and managed to locate your ancestors' gravestone in the Howff. It's in quite good condition and we got a fair few photos of the stone and also the area in the graveyard it's situated in - just to give you an idea of the layout of the Howff.

The weather wasn't too good today, and the gravestone is situated under a large spreading tree, but the photos are actually quite good.

How would you like me to send them? You could PM me with your email address and I could email them to you if you wish, or I can try to upload the main one to the Gallery. (I may need some help with that though as I tried to upload an OPR of my own a month or so ago and it didn't work ) Let me know what you decide.

Kind regards

Vee :)
