Does anyone know if there are any plans to record the MI's in Ratho Churchyard?

Or is it a case of another rummage around on my next visit to Scotland :?:

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean
Maybe try contacting the Scottish Genealogy Society.
www.scotsgenealogy.com
They hold the largest collection of MIs in Scotland and have a lot of recorded, but as yet unpublished, material.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Jean,

What era are you looking for?

The churchyard is quite full and is mostly 19th century and older. The "new" cemetery opened in 1899 and its burial records are held by the City of Edinburgh Council Cemetery Records office at Mortonhall Crematorium.

Also there is another small cemetery a mile or so outside the village at St Mary's Scottish Episcopal Church, which is within the grounds of Dalmahoy (hotel, golf club etc), but comes under Ratho.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew

It's the 19th century I'm interested in. Mainly 1850's and 1860's.

I have an 1855 d.c. which states that Margaret Kay m.s. Scott is buried there.

Her son, George Kay died before 1855. He was a shoemaker. There are a couple of other shoemakers called Kay, who died in the 1850's and I'm trying to establish a relationship between them.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,

I took a walk round Ratho Churchyard this afternoon and found no sign of your Kays or Scotts. I also checked in the Episcopal Churchyard, but no sign of them there either.

One headstone of a Kay family in Ratho Churchyard read as follows:

In memory of
William Kay
who died 22nd Jan 1832
and
Catherine Carfrae
his wife
who died 4th July 1831.
Also their children
David died 20th Feb 1853
James died 28th March 1868
Janet died 8th Sep 1882 aged 82
Margaret died 6th Sep 1889 aged 86
Helen died 14th Nov 1890 aged 84

Is that lot of any use to you?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew

That was very kind of you.

This is the other lot of Kays, residing in Ratho at the same time as my lot!

Now have to figure out if and how they are connected :?

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,

Do William Kay (1843-1929), married to Janet Muir (1841-1920), and their children George (1869-1920), William (1873-1929), James (1876-1955), John (1878-1960) and Adam (1880-1882) feature in your family tree?

Or Margaret Kay (c1837-1908), married to James Muir (1838-1898), with children James Muir (1861-????), Elizabeth (1861-????), Janet (1862-1864), Janet (1865-????), Robert (1867-1868), John (1869-1940) and Adam (1874-????)?

Both of these families started out in Ratho and are related to me through their Muir families.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew

Although the names William Kay and Margaret Kay feature in my family, I'm afraid I can't find a connection to your two

I think the William on the headstone may be a brother to my David Kay b abt 1786, but lack of birth entries on the IGI, doesn't help matters. Also my David and this William died before 1855.........so inconsiderate :!:

At least David appeared in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, which was a great help.

If I should turn up anything in the future I'll let you know.

Best wishes
Jean
