Cadder Cemetery, Bishopbriggs

Post by casserole » Thu Aug 23, 2007 8:26 pm

I was in Glasgow last weekend from Kent and I went to Cadder Cemetery in Bishopbriggs on Sunday to find the grave of my greatgrandparents . I have the grave number (525) but I should have realised that there probably wouldn't be staff there on a Sunday to direct me to the grave so it was a fruitless visit.

I wondered if anyone has a plan of the cemetery.

Hello Carole,

This isn't really what you're looking for, but you can use Google Earth to get a good idea of the layout of Cemeteries (and anything else for that matter). That's if the area is covered and the resolution of the image is reasonable.

Alan

Edit: The Cadder image doesn't look much good when compared to Paisley for example.

Hello Alan,
Thank you for your reply. I will look in on Google Earth to see what it's like. Still need to look at the cemetery plan though for the exact location of the grave but good of you to post a message. Thanks again

Hi Carole,
I may be going to Cadder cemetery soon to look for the grave of my ggrandfather...if you want me to look again for you, let me know the names to look for.
Did you check the gravestones for the grave number you have...sometimes they are etched in the base of the headstone.

Hi Carole
Why not give the loacl council a phone and ask for directions or a description of where to find the grave?

As you already have a lair number, they should be able to direct you.

Best wishes

Hello Lesley and Liza,
Many thanks to you both for answering my posting about Cadder Cemetery.

Since my last posting and reply from Alan I got a cemetery plan from East Dumbarton council. When I contacted them they informed me that they had only recently got this plan to email out to people and that was why they hadn't offered it when I contacted them in the first instance.

I was able to send this to my sister with a mark of where grave 525 is. She went along but there was no one around to speak to so she worked out where it might be and sent me some photographs. I intend to have a look when I next go to Bishopbriggs but that could be a long time away.

So, Liza, could I take you up on your offer to have a look to see if you can actually pin down the site of the grave. The grave is number 525 and is in the old part of the cemetery and the position of the grave is on the left side (Crosshill Road) as you enter the old part heading towards the house. In the photograph my sister sent it looks as though there is a small tree in that area.

The names are: Edward FOX died 1942 age 67
Mary Maria FOX died 1954 age 76
Edward FOX died 1934 aged 8

Many thanks,
Carole

Hi Carole
Just something to bear in mind... sometimes, although there is a lair owned by a family, there can be no stone. I know this from first hand experience having failed to find a grave, only to have to go back another day and luckily on this occaision there were some cemetery staff there who were able to confirm, from the lists they had and the names on the graves either side, that the plot was there allright, there was just no marker. :( Hope this does not turn out to be the case with you.

Best wishes

Hello Lesley,
Yes, I must be prepared for that but even to be able to go there and know EXACTLY where they are would be the next best thing. And you never know, maybe the family would think about putting a little memorial stone there. Something to consider.

All the best,
Carole
