Hello Kate,
Could this be her parents in 1901, with the last name contracted? The occupation, age and birthplace of her father fits with that in 1911:

1901
6 Prospect St, Canongate, Edinburgh St Margaret
France Cannon, 29, Head, born England, Rivet Heater (shipyard)
Mary A Cannon, 29, Wife, born Lochee, Forfarshire, Laundress

Do you have her birth record and know that she was, in fact, born in 1900? Otherwise there is a possibility she could have been born just after the census was taken. One thing I found interesting is that Francis said, in 1911, that he had been married for 10 years, yet Mary Ann was 11. So that made me think she might be under the name of Conway... but no luck so far.

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Sarah and Kate
To answer Sarah's question, I did a quick birth search for Mary and she is indeed born in 1900 to the parents mentioned under the name Cunningham.
Sarah could be right about the name shortening  :D
Stewie

Searching for: Anderson, Balks, Barton, Courtney, Davidson, Downie, Dunlop, Edward, Flucker, Galloway, Graham, Guthrie, Higgins, Laurie, Mathieson, McLean, McLuckie, Miln, Nielson, Payne, Phillips, Porterfield, Stewart, Watson

Hi Stewie,
Yes, I have since noticed that she was born in 1900 and that her parents were married well in advance of that event  So where is wee Mary Ann in 1901? I can't find her with grandparents, or boarding out somewhere or anything... Could she just have got skipped when the information was copied?

[cheers]
Sarah

Hi Kate, Sarah and Stew,

I see another census page of interest in the 1901 census.
  • 15 Wilkie Place, North Leith
  • Mary A Cunningham, wife, married, 20, shipwright's wife, born Dundee
  • Mary A Cunningham, daughter, 1, born Leith
No sign of Francis on this one. Could Mary Ann (senior) be enumerated twice in the 1901 census? Birthplace: Lochee and Dundee - same area. When she gave her age, it was a better match to the marriage certificate.

All the best,

AndrewP

Nice find, Andrew! I don't know why that didn't come up in a search the first time. Ancestry has the two Mary Anns aged 30 and 7, but Findmypast has 20 and 1, as you said. I wonder if Francis was away and a neighbor gave information about the couple who used to live next door...

Best wishes,
Sarah
