Robertsons in 1861 and 1871 .....

Post by Rosemary » Sun Jan 09, 2005 7:33 pm

Could some kind person please do a look-up for me? I'm trying to find where John Robertson , shawl weaver, and Helen Robertson, nee Barr, his wife, were in 1861 and 1871. They may have died before 1871..certainly both listed as dead in 1874, the year their son, James, married to Iasabella O'Hara, died.
James and Isabella were in Paisley but I'm not sure where John and Helen came from. Could anyone help?

Hi Rosemary,

The snag for Paisley censuses in those years is that there are no name indexes. But street indexes are held at The Mitchell Library.

Do you have any possible addresses for around those years? From siblings MCs maybe? Where was James living in 1874? Possibly he was there in 1871. Could any of the witnesses on the 1874 MC be related?

I can't see parents John ROBERTSON & Helen BARR in Paisley 1851, but if this is James in 1881, and he's got his birthplace right, then James was born Paisley. But, if his parents moved to Paisley when he was very young then he may have presumed Paisley to be his birthplace when it was actually elsewhere (abt 1852).

Provided James got his parents' names right - any chance that this marriage is them? Could well be a red herring though.

Your only other way is to trawl through the census films of 1861 & 1871 for Paisley. Quite a task - it took me all day looking for my GG-GF in 1841, and the population then was much less than it was 20 and 30 yrs later....

Or if you're in no great hurry - wait for SP to put the earlier census indexes online.
