Wood nee Wood Leiper Muchalls Nigg Aberdeen & Stonehav

Post by scotlyn » Sun Jan 30, 2005 2:09 am

Recently joined this group & sent an email concerning some brick walls in my family tree
I Have James Leiper Stonehaven B 22/3/1838 Married Margaret Wood Born 9/12/1840 My great grand parents
but my troubles start with the Wood connections
James Leiper's Mother was Jane Leiper Nee Wood I have no Info as to this Jane's Parents
Jame's father was John Leiper Born 27/5/1809

While Margaret's Mother is also Jane Wood Nee Wood
Margaret's Father was Alexander Wood But have no other info on either this Jane Wood or Alexander Wood
I think Margaret wood may have been born in Aberdeen

Just to complicate matters Margaret also had a son Alexander Wood before she married James Leiper

Thus both my great Great grand Mothers were Jane Wood Nee Wood
Can any one help please

A search limited to Kincardinshire, an appropiate age, based on the fact that she was alive in 1865, but can't be found in 1881, soon produces a death register entry for Jane LEIPER MS WOOD.

Jane WOOD MS WOOD is more of a problem, - there's no matching record in Kincardineshire, but I'm beginning to believe that her surname may not have been WOOD, - this being a transcription error on the part of the registrar. If you look at the witnesses you will see another surname, and there is a post 1881 matching death record in a Kincardineshire parish, that matches this and the above 1881 census entry..... tempting, but then WOOD is a frequently occuring surname in this area, and I didn't look in Aberdeenshire...............

Davie

Added later.................

The logic in my last para doesn't stand up as we've established in IGI that there is a matching family for Alexander WOOD and Jane WOOD MS WOOD.

Worse than that, it looks very much the situation that Portlethen in one of those fishing villages, similar to those on the Moray coast, where a small number of surnames predominate. Between 1855 and 1954 there are, just in Portlethen, 156 deaths with the surname WOOD, and 107 with the surname LEIPER.

Altho' the first death record suggested above looks to be a very good fit, there's needs to be corroborating evidence.

Hi Thanks David
The Margaret Wood Married James Leiper at the manse portlethen gives her birth date on the cert as9/12/1840 so I do not think that the Margaret Wood Born9/11/1842 can be the same Margaret Wood
I think that there may have been many interrelationship marriages But to sort out which family belongs to which
But you have been able to fill in the siblings of James Leiper for me
I had some of them
I will go back through my paper work & see how many I can now put in place
From copies from the microfiche at Stonehaven libary I have been able to get John Leiper married Anne Smith & the births of their 13 children
the next generation John Leiper Married Ann Main I think But Have not got comfirmation of this John Leiper & Ann Main would be the parents of John born27/5/1809
I will leave this for tonight & do a double check tomorrow if I can If you have any thing on this further I am most appreciating of your experteze

I know her age is out according to what you have written but surely this has got to be Margaret on the 1881 census.

I do have copies of some documents and the Christening records, but my printer died and am looking for a replacement.

Do you have anything other than C. dates for John Leiper & Ann Smith's 13 Children? I take it you are connected to John Leiper m Ann Main. Would you send me any info you have on these? I'd appreciate it.

I do have the copy of the 1880 Boat "Isabella", but thanks for the offer.

I know how you feel about people having the same name: both my great grandfathers are: James Craig, my 2 gr gr grandfathers are John Craig as well as my grandfather, my dad & my brother. My grandmother was also a Craig before she married. And then I'm in and out with the Woods. Just gets the head to spinning sometimes to keep them straight. Yes, I am on the Stonehaven site, my Dad was born there.
