Could someone please check the 1851 Census for John Lando? My gggrandmother married John Lando at Biggar in 1853.
The family story is that John Lando came from Genoa Italy in about 1842 at the age of 14, he stowed away on a ship to get here. I am assuming that he landed in the Edinburgh area. He is not on the 1851 Lanarkshire Census nor can I find him on the pro.gov.uk web site to find out when he obtained his naturalisation.

Re: 1851 Census search for Lando
Hi Maggie,
Sorry can't help with 1851 - maybe need to wait for SP to put the index online to see if he's in Scotland.
I notice a 3yr old Marion LANDO in Libberton 1861 with 62yr old Archibald FINLAYSON & family if it's of any use. John & Margaret are possibly in Linton, Peebleshire 1861 - John (1859) & Grace (1861) both born there. Also probably there 1871 too.

The online IGI gives these children born to the family:
ARCHIBALD LANDO - Birth: 31 AUG 1856 Biggar, Lanark
MARION PLENDSERLIETH LANDS - Birth: 28 MAR 1858 West Linton, Peebles
JOHN LANDO - Birth: 04 DEC 1859 West Linton, Peebles
GRACE FINLAYSON LANDO - Birth: 13 SEP 1861 West Linton, Peebles
PETER FINLAYSON LANDO - Birth: 15 JUN 1863 West Linton, Peebles
ELIZABETH CAMERON MCKENZIE LANDO - Birth: 04 DEC 1866 West Linton, Peebles
PETER FINLAYSON LANDO - Birth: 09 MAR 1869 West Linton, Peebles
MARY ARCHIBALD FINLAYSON LANDO - Birth: 16 JUN 1874 West Linton, Peebles
Looks like Peter of 1863 probably died before March 1869 when his name was re-used.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Thanks Jack and AndrewP,
I have already got this information. The Lando’s moved to West Linton in the late 1850’s. They are on the 1861 to 1901 Census’s living there.
Marion Lando age 3 was with her grandfather Archibald Finlayson.
Margaret Finlayson is on the 1851 Lanarkshire Census but not John Lando. I have assumed he landed somewhere in Scotland in about 1842 – 1843 and should be on the 1851 Census around the Edinburgh area. There is also a possibility that landed in Ireland as on the 1901 census there is another John Lando living in Glasgow but born in Ireland.
The naturalization information on the pro.gov web site started at 1845, I cannot find him on it but he could have changed his Italian name.

John Lando
Thanks to George McLeod of Lothian FHS there is a John Lundie age 15, born in Italy, in Biggar in 1851.
The reference is Parish 623 - Book No 3 - Page No. 11
I did find this one on the Index of 1851 but found that there are other John Lundie's in Scotland so I did not go any further.
He has got me thinking that this may be the correct one and that he may have been indexed as Lundie (being a Scottish name). I will have to get a copy of the original transcript of the 1851 census. We are coming home in April to try to get this info and other details.
I cannot I find him on the pro.gov.uk web site as John Lando, to find out when he obtained his naturalisation, family stories said he arrived at age 14. On the 1851 census he is a British subject. Does Scotland have another system to England.
