1841 census, Port Glasgow .....

Post by marva » Thu May 05, 2005 1:51 am

I have checked of freecen.rootsweb and can find nothing. Could someone please check, if you have the 1841 census for Port Glasgow for Mary Boyd, Father Alexander, Mother Rebecca. She was married 1845 to Alexander Park and does show up on census' afterwards: 1861 age 45, 1871 age 46 (boy, I'd like to find her secret to this, just one year older in a 10 year span) 1881 age 60. When her daughter was born in 1855 she was 30, at her death in 1886 she ws 58. I have been unable to find her birth, I have checked 1809 to 1829, but she seems to be hiding in the bushes. Possibly the 1841 census would have a different birth year as this was before she was married.

Any tid bit of help would sure be appreciated

Hullo Marva

The only Mary BOYD I can find in the 1841 Census for Port Glasgow is this one:

Bay Street, Port Glasgow
BOYD Mrs Robert 60 Ind. Born Sct
Jane 30 Born Sct
Mary 25 Born Rfw

No occupations mentionned for the two younger women.

Hope this is of some help.
All the best
Catriona

Hello Marva,

According to an extract from the IGI, Mary BOYD's mothers name was Elizabeth McCHELOICE (could this be McCulloch?).

MARY BOYD
Female
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parents:
Mother: ELISABETH MCCHELOICE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages:
Spouse: ALEXANDER PARK
Marriage: 29 MAR 1845 Renfrew, Renfrew, Scotland

Did it say on her daughter's birth entry in 1855 that Mary was born in Port Glasgow?

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette

I also saw that on the IGI about Mary's mother, but on Mary's death certificate her mother is listed as Rebecca Mc Kechnie.

On daughter Margaret's birth certificate it states: Mother: Mary Park, Maiden name Boyd, her 7th child, 30 years, b Port Glasgow. Father: Alexander Park, parents married 1845 Paisley, 1 boy & 1 girl living (that would be Margaret) 2 boys & 3 girls deceased. Of those deceased I have only found one: James b abt 1845 m 1867 d 1911.

Another reason I go with the McKechnie name, is I have other McKechnie from Renfrew.

Hi Marva,

Like Catriona, i can't see a Mary BOYD to suit in Port Glasgow 1841 either. There are 2 Marys aged 15 in the Abbey, Paisley parish - but not with a BOYD family. One is possibly with a Rebecca McDougal 45, Archibald 10, Margaret 8, the other as a household head. But no way of knowing if either are your Mary.

The OPR record 575 vol 4 p 202 (Renfrew) says Alexander PARK, labourer, Renfrew & Mary BOYD, Paisley. No marriage date - the proclamation was 29 MAR 1845.

Here's another age for Mary to add to the list, and looks like this wee Margaret has died pre 1855; this also gives a better idea of when James was born.

Margaret PARK, daur, 4, --------- b Paisley, RFW
James PARK, son, 2, --------- b Paisley, RFW

Hi Jack

No, I did not have the 1851 census. I had checked all others but that and thought I'd go for 1841 as that was before she was married. But On the 1851 census her age is different and I went back further, still no Mary. The age of James put more light on it, but could not find him on SP either. But by you getting the 1851 census I now have another child that had died. This would have been the first Margaret born abt 1847, but again not on SP. The Margaret born in 1855 is my great grandmother. But I did get some info I did not have. I believe the other 2 girls that died before Margaret b 1855 were Rebecca and Agnes but of course I can't find them. (this is from the pattern of naming children) See.......your memory is not going again....you knew before I asked about the 1851.
