William Mitchell, cant find his death entry

Post by Kathy » Sun Jan 04, 2009 12:25 am

I have been searching SP for the death of William Mitchell without success.

William Mitchell born 1818 Port Glasgow, son of John Mitchell & Martha McArthur.

William's spouse Susan McMillan 1821c Ireland - died 1867 Port Glasgow.

William is the informant at the death of his wife Susan in 1867 at Dockhead St Port Glasgow, he appears to be still alive in 1883 from the information on his daughter Esther's marriage entry.

The only two likely death entries on SP for the whole of Renfrew are 1877 & 1894 neither of them my William.

Can anyone please suggest how to find him?

Hi Kathy,

Have you found him in the censuses? If so, where and when?

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks for the reply Andrew.

1841 William is with parents John & Martha - Sinclairs Close Port Glasgow
Both John & William are Canvas Weavers.

1851 Church Street Port Glasgow - Canvas Weaver

1858 Daughter Helen's birth - King Street Port Glasgow - William is a Fireman (looks like March Steam Ship)

1861 Wife Susan is at Woods Lane Birkmyre's land Port Glasgow. William is a visitor with Mary Maden at Woods Lane Port Glasgow

1867 Susan dies, William is the informant - Dockhead St Port Glasgow

1871 Cant locate any of the family on the census

1876 William is the informant for his sons death

1881 Possible match - William aged 60 Labourer Lennox Back Land Port Glasgow

Hi Kathy,
Have you tried following his children in the censuses, to see if he went to live with any of them? Did any of them emigrate?

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

The Mitchell's seem to have been a family that did'nt want anyone to know their business, its been difficult getting as much information as I have, the females especially seem to fudge the age especially with marriage, then the census ages are all over the place.

The last real proof that William Mitchell is still about is that he is informant of his son Henry's death in 1876, the residence for Henry is Lennox Buildings Port Glasgow Road, but no indication that William also resides there.

In 1883 his daughter Esther marries, William is not entered as deceased.

The only census I have found the Mitchell's together was in 1841.

Who did she marry? Have you found marriages for Agnes and Helen? I'm just wondering if William went to live with one of his daughters in his old age.

I assume you mean 1851, as they all appear to be there together on Church Street.

In 1871 Henry is a Lodger in the home of John and Mary McNish, at 5 Wood Lane, Port Glasgow.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Agnes, spouse Thomas Upton & moves south, I have her in every census through to 1901 - William is not with them

Esther married twice, first to George Hill in 1866, then Mitchell Orr 1883 - William is not with them.

Henry 1853 - 1876
William 1854 - 1856

Helen (Ellen) spouse Mitchell Keith in 1879, cant locate them in 1881, do locate them in 1891 & 1901 in Port Glasgow.

I have just been searching again on SP, there are 34 Mitchell's deaths between 1880 & 1910 but not William.

Hi Kathy,

Could this be Mitchell and Helen in 1881, only he is transcribed as William? Since the images for 1881 are not available, we can't check to see if the transcription is correct! As you have noted, their ages are all over the map from census to census, but at least his occupation seems fairly consistent...

1881
43 Fleming St, Govan, Lanarkshire
William Keith, 30, born Montrose, Forfarshire, Ship Rigger
Helen Keith, 26, Wife, born Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Annie Caird, 5, Niece, born Montrose, Forfarshire
George Christie, 24, Boarder, born Montrose, Forfarshire, Ship Joiner

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Mitchell Keith would have only been 21yo in 1881, going by later census he was born Port Glasgow, his employment is still a rivitter.

Mitchell Keith's parents Edmonston & Hannah are at 14 Argyle St PG in 1881, when Helen & Keith married in 1879 their address was 13 Argyle St PG.

Hi Annette,

On Esther's marriage 1883 Susan is listed as deceased.

Susan Mitchell nee McMillan died 14th Feb 1867.
