Death 1975

Post by Lizzie S » Sat Mar 11, 2023 5:31 pm

Hi,
I have been revisiting my family tree and came across 2 statements I can't verify. Not sure where I found the information.

The first is Christina Smith who died on 15th Dec a the Royal Beaston Memorial Hospital, Glasgow. I beleive the family lived in Johnstone Renfrewshire. I have searched Scotlands People for a record of her death to no avail.

The second is her daughter, also Christina who ws born 1964. The only record I can find is a Chritina Mary Smith born 1964 Johnstone Renfrew. This may be her but not sure about the Mary and I am loath to fork out £12 for a certificate that might not be her.

Any help woul be much appreciated.

Lizzie

In what year did the first Christina Smith die? and what was her maiden name?
knowing her maiden name may help narrow down both death and birth questions.
Knowing the year she died could help with newspaper announcements or gravestone inscriptions.

The Beatson is a cancer specialist hospital, so patients will come from all over the west of Scotland.
Depending on when she died, she may be registered in Glasgow [ Martha Street] as place of death, or in Johnstone as place of residence.

EDIT: I didn't notice the year 1975 in the Post Title.

I'll also add your 2nd post here, as it helps to keep everything in the one thread.
The second part of my last post was regarding the birth of Christina Smith b 1964. I think I had been staring at the screen too long as I realised just now that the record I found is likely to be the correct one as her fathers adoptive mother was Mary. I guess I was only thinking of her birth mothers name.
Sorry

I searched SP with the information you gave - there are several Christin? Smith registered in Glasgow in 1975/76
but only 1 in Johnstone.
Christina SMITH or MEIKLE or WEBSTER D 1975 aged 56 Johnstone mother's maiden name MULLAN

The Christina Mary SMITH born in 1964 in Johnstone has a Mother's Maiden Name of WEBSTER.

Does any of that match with what you have on your tree?

if so the Christina WEBSTER or MEIKLE married James SMITH in Johnstone in 1961 and they had 4 children - Pamela, Douglas, Christina, Angus.

Does that help in any way?

Thank you so much for looking into this for me.

Christina Smith or Meikle or Webster is the right name. She was a Webster and her first husband whom she was divorced from was Meikle.
I did see that record on Sp which gave the correct date of death but her mothers maiden name was MacMillan. Maybe it has been transcribed wrongly. It seems likely that is her.

James Smith and Christina Webster did marry on 31st Dec 1960 so registered as 1961. However they did only have one child Christina. There were two children from her first marriage, Jean and a boy whose name I haven't determined.

Since I posted I have been in touch with the daughter Christina, turns out that she is my second cousin! She confirmed that she is the Christina Mary born 1964 in Johnstone. They moved over to Cananda in 1966.

I had no knowledge of her or this line in my family as James Smith was adopted having been born to my Great Aunt. So a bit of a surprise as this Great Aunt always seemed rather strict to me as a small child.

Obviously hadn't really taken in the dates as it would seem that the family moved to Canada 1966 but the mother died in Glasgow 1975! Willtry to find out more.

He may be Joseph Waller MEIKLE b 1941 Johnstone & Elderslie ? There's a Jeanie Webster MEIKLE born Lochwinnoch 1942 both mms Webster.

Perhaps passenger /Immigration lists would help - though they may not go to the more recent dates you need.
If the family were in fact living in Canada then the death you have found is probably just a co-incidence. I did think that a birth date of ~1920 was a little early to be bearing children in the 1960's [not impossible, but not very likely] so discount any Mullan connection.

Thanks Wilma,
I'll take a look at the Joseph you found, he looks a distinct possibility.
As for the death of Christina in 1975, it was her daughter who informed me she died in Glasgow. I haven't liked to ask her how that came about but maybe I should. I've bitten the bullet and purchased the certificate so will see what that says when it finally arrives. I do rather reesent having to pay £12 plus postage especially if its not the right person!

It does get tricky the closer to present you get as , quite rightly , records are not in full public view.

Hi Wilma,
I had a look at the Joseph Waller and realised that his fathers father was Joseph Waller so that must be the right one.
Thanks.

Hi Wilma,
I bought the certificate and it proves to be the right person. Chritina Smith did die in Royal Beaston Memorial hospital in 1975 age 56yrs. The family must have returned to Scotland at some point. As you say she was relatively old to be giving birth in 1964 but it did happen. Anyway mystery solved. I just now have to find out when they went back and forth to Canada! its never ending!
