1841 marriage

Post by nelmit » Sun Oct 07, 2012 4:50 pm

I won't give any background except John Connell married Elizabeth Napier at St Andrew's RC Church,Glasgow in 1841.
Can anybody make out where John was from?

Well, I want to say Rapler... but that doesn't help much, does it? :? And what I see as an R is not like the other Rs on the page, nor is it like any other capital letter on the page.

All the best,
Sarah

I thought the "R" might be ab "N"?
But that makes Naples??

Best wishes,
Meg

What I'm beginning to wonder is ..................could it be Napier as in his wife's surname although it does look a bit different from the other 2 on the page? :?

I keep changing my mind about the first letter (R or N) but I agree it looks like ler at the end.

From 1861 - 1881 he says he was born in Kilbride, Lanarkshire.

On a daughter's 1855 birth entry he says West Kilbride.

I can't find them in 1851 but I think this must be them in 1841 from FREECEN (first daughter was born at Pollokshaws).

Piece: SCT1841/562 Place: Eastwood -Renfrewshire Enumeration District: 5
Civil Parish: Eastwood Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 5 Page: 4
Address: Pollokshaws Hunter St

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
KISSON John M 40 Ag Lab Outside Census County (1841)
KISSON Agness F 65 Ireland
WALKER Mary F 20 Renfrewshire
NAIPER Elizabeth F 20 Cotton Carder Ireland
GILLEN Sarah F 25 Bleachar Ireland
CONNELL John M 20 Ag Lab Ireland
CONNELL Owen M 25 Ag Lab Ireland

I can't go back any further with the Connell family but would like to be sure of John's birth place (Naples would be pretty exotic - I like that). :D

Thanks for looking Sarah and Meg.

Annette

Mmmm you could be on to something there. :D

Now you've suggested that I can see Raph...and squiggly bits at the end...............in fact the more I look the more I see Raphoe!!! :D =D> =D>

Why on earth did he consistently state Kilbride on later records? His wife was always Ireland and on the 1855 birth gives Co. Down as in the marriage. Which leads to the curious fact that every other Irish person on the marriage register has the county written after their name except John Connell.

Thanks a lot,

Annette

You may be able to improve the readability of the image by adjusting the "image quality" in ScotlandsPeople which is usually set to low to help download speeds on slow connections. If you go into "Your Details" in ScotlandsPeople and at the bottom of the page you will see the image quality box, if you set it to high or highest you will get a clearer image with no digital noise although the size will increase.
