Hi Andrew
Banff is in Aberdeenshire on a modern map (post-1997). It was the county town of Banffshire until 1975, then in Grampian Region (Banff and Buchan District) from 1975 until 1997.
Thanls for the clarification - I had no idea!! Sometimes my head is stuck very firmly somewhere in the 1800s!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Andrew,
Is there a particular site or book where you found this information? Sounds like a very valuable resource, and I'd like to have a look  :D

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

That information came from between my ears rather than a book or website. There are various maps online showing the plaaces and their counties. For those who don't know where the place is to start with, a modern map searchable by place name is a starting point - such as www-streetmap.co.uk or www.multimap.com - and there are more of the like. Having established where the place is, you should be able to find it on the maps of the older years on the National Library of Scotland's digital library, map section.

There are a few significant dates when boundaries were moved.

1870 - various changes of parish and county boundaries around the Moray (Elginshire) and Inverness-shire border as a result of The Inverness and Elgin County Boundaries Act 1870[/list]

1891-1892 - many changes of parish and county boundaries to try and eliminate detached pieces of parishes (sometimes in the same county, sometimes not), detached pieces of county within another county, or parishes straddling a county boundary as a result of Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889.

1975 - the abolition of the counties, replacing them with regions and districts (and three unitary island councils) as a result of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973.

1996 (not 1997 as I said above) - the abolition of the regions and districts, replacing them with unitary authorities, as a result of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1994.
