Meaning of a name

Hello Wilma,

You’re right, there seems to have been a whole lot of prominent Anson’s, probably all related, who may have contributed to the use of Anson as a first name. I guess it would depend on whether any of them were prominent enough in the public mind at the time of the child’s birth or if there was some other connection.

The first thing that entered my mind when I saw the name was the RN as I knew there had been a Battleship named Anson and that there was an Admiral Anson back there somewhere.

Like Currie my first thought was of the Ship / Admiral.

If you check Google UK there is a biologist living in London today called Anson Mackay.

Just to muddy the waters a bit but with it being a Sutherland name would it have anything to do with the Caithness name Manson?
