The Talking Scot census information pages are still there...just not linked from the forum yet. Click on the 1841 tab for a list of abbreviations which were the standard ones used:

Got it! Well I think

Freecen has it down as "Various Kinds Of Labour"

It was Gordon and Jean's discussion that helped me find it on Freecen.

Freecen is great for cross referencing things - and cheaper to search for the years that have covered so far, so you can find the exact image on SP

snap again Jean

Ah that's it , I was trawling through Freecen for a female named Robertson around Whitehills.

I'd tried every other wee fishing port I could think of up there!

go to http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl to search FreeCen. It's not complete but is a handy resource never the less. Esp. as a lot of Banffshire is now there.

Strangely, when my GGGGrandfather married Isabel Cameron in 1837, he said he was a salmon fisher. I was not aware of such an activity that close to the sea (Morat Firth) so have assumed he may have been on a fishing boat. The strange thing is that he was away for both 1841 and 1851 censuses.
No there were allot of Salmon Fisher connected with the Salmon rivers - I can give you the lecture if you want  But the short description is they had two methods - small row boats that dragged nets across the river for hauling back, and Stake nets which were tied to a row of stakes heading out into the sea just off the mouth - those fish were collected at low tide. They didn't go out for days on end like the Herring Fishers on boats, and usually kept a little croft and worked as farm labourers in the off season. Which leads to them listed as Fishers one census and labourers another, they were both. If you want to know more you can PM me

You can still see the remains of these stakes in some rivers.e.g. in the Tay just to the east of Tayport.
You can see a selection of salmon fishing photos from further up the Tay at Newburgh here

Depending on the spawning season in the area, could that count for his absence on both census reports, as they were always taken in Mar/April?
