7.1 Earthquake in New Zealand

Hi all
I live in the east coast off the North Island town Napier we had 3 quakes shortly after the Christchurch one's quite heavy ones it certainly gets your blood flowing as you wait to see what will happen next, but we live to fight another day.

Unfortunately we still get the riff raff who will try and steal from homes which have been vacated but the general resilience of the people will come through and they can re-build their lives.

Glad to hear there was no more damage with the aftershocks. I was quite concerned when the earthquake hit as my cousin is on an around the world trip and she had just arrived in New Zealand the day before the quake hit. Luckily she was on the north island and didn't feel a thing.

We're quite used to earthquakes here in Southern California, and think nothing of the little ones which happen on a regular basis.

Living in Southern California, I can really feel for anyone living in Earthquake Country. We have earthquakes all of the time here and unlike Ina, I will never get used to it. The last big one we had was on Easter Sunday. Nearly all of the family were at my sister's house, we had just finished out dinner when it started. It seemed to go on for a long time with the chandelier swinging above the dining room table. Luckily there was no damage where we lived. I was so glad that I wasn't alone when it happend. Earthquakes scare the life out of me!

Hi Sheila,

I think most of us are used to the small earthquakes (3.5 - 4.0), living in Palm Desert we experience tham on a regular basis. It's the BIG ones that scare us. We also felt the 7.0 on Easter Sunday and it seemed to last longer than most. Our house did a lot of rock and rolling (LOL) but luckily no damage.

We've been told that the small quakes relieve the pressure on the fault and will postpone the BIG one. Let's hope they know what they are talking about.

I still prefer living with the California quakes as opposed to when we lived in the mid west and were in constant fear of tornados.

The best thing about that Easter Earthquake was that nobody was killed. Like you, I hope that the experts are right when they say that all of these smaller quakes postpone the "big" one.
I wouldn't like to live where there were tornados either. It seems as though there is always something. There is no place on Earth that is entirely safe. There are some places though, that are safer than others.

Putting up with quakes is the price we pay for living in paradise . I wouldn't live anywhere else..........blue skies and sunshine every day =D> =D> =D>. When we first moved to the desert I thought I'd miss the seasons, but I don't. I can look at the snow on the mountain tops in the winter but still have 80+ degrees here in the lowland.......just perfect

Hi Ina

I have to agree with you and I am reminded of this everytime I look out the window or sit on my deck looking at the Pacific Ocean. We are up on a hill overlooking the ocean. The temp here is usually never too hot and of course is never ever cold.
Although my husband is from California, I am from Montreal, Canada. I remember those sub zero days and I mean sub zero Farenheit not Celsius. After living so many years here, I doubt that I could very endure Canadian winters again, unless that they have warmed up a lot from global warming.

I'm with you Sheila, I couldn't go back to a cold climate......the old bones couldn't take it

I grew up in Greenock Scotland where it is known for it's rain. I hate the rain and love the fact that it never rains here in the desert.
