Hi Carol,
So... that would be Quintin's half brother? Looks like he was on the way long before Dawson died. This is shaping up to be a good soap opera-- I wonder if we could sell the story to make money to endow a TS scholarship to pay the way for Australian TS members to fly to the Scotland's People Centre in Edinburgh :wink:

[cheers]

Hey that's a thought!

There are records for two more children--Euphemia and William-- and birth for Nicholas Jr but now my internet explorer is acting up so I lost the post that I was trying to send you! I'm finding all of them in the AU indexes on Ancestry AU.

Wow, Euphemia was born in 1876 and William in 1877... That's cutting it a bit close. It would be really nice to know when, exactly, Dawson left. But I can't find him on the passenger lists leaving Victoria :?

Regards,
Sarah

Later: There's also a Mary Euphemia in 1879, so maybe the first little Euphemia didn't live.

Makes you even more curious about the divorce records, doesn't it?!

The first Euphemia only lived to be seven months old.

I can't find Dawson's departure from the scene either.

Hi Sarah

There are a number of Renouf - Nichs (Nicholas presumably) records on the Vic Cds - the Renout could be a transcription error. I will try to find them all & see if it makes any sense. I have also found families (in England rather than Australia) where a surname was changed when an adult child discovered the father was not the father - so to speak. Certainly an interesting family to trace.

Carol - the newspaper site is an absolute gem - sometimes things are reported in a completely different state - I found a death in Queensland (sadly via someone escaping a lunatic asylum) in a newspaper from Adelaide (SA) - there are many many problems with the transcriptions so worth using lots of options to check.

Probably a different family - so my Renouf is a red herring
Renouf Nichs Jas Thos born parents Jas Ellen Martin Carlton 1900/17462 (just the given names - mimic the 1882 birth)
(parents married 1897)

Births
Renaut Euphemia - Nicholas Josephine Boland Sand 1876/5207 - died 1876/10276
Renant William - Nicholas and Josephine Boland Sandhurst 1877/18313
Renant Mary Euphemia - Nicholas and Josephine Boland Sand 1879/25664
Renaut Nickles James Th - Nickles and Josephine Boland Sand 1882/11853

Deaths
Renaut Nicholas Father Thomas mother Unknown Euphemia 45 1882/3345
Renaut Josine parents unknown age 72 Melb S 1920/11545
These could be interesting death certificates but quite likely that husband Dawson is simply omitted by the informants. I cannot find a marriage for Josephine and Nicholas - the birth certificate of one of their children should give where they were married 7 place of birth for each of them.
This may be the immigration for Nicholas - age looks about right based on age at death.
RENANT NICHOLAS 24 JAN 1861 YORKSHIRE B 186 005

Marriages
Renant Mary Euphemai born Bgo married Jno Jas Montgomery 1899/3788
Renant Wm born Bgo married Gerte Julia Painter 1901/2278
Renaut Nicholas Jas MARTIN Ellen Ctina Carnduff 1914/478

Lots of children born to William and Gerte - recorded under Renant and Renaut - do you need the names?
Death Renaut Wm - Renaut Nicholas and Josine Boland 42 Bendigo 1920/8830

Couple of burials from Alan's link
* (1876) RENANT, EUPHEMIA
* (1882) RENANT, NICHOLAS

and some more
* (1981) RENAUT, ALFRED WILLIAM Q
* (1992) RENAUT, BERNICE EILEEN
* (1953) RENAUT, GERTRUDE JULIA
* (1987) RENAUT, IVY PEARL
* (1920) RENAUT, JOSEPHINE
* (2002) RENAUT, QUINTON AXEL
* (1903) RENAUT, QUINTON JOHN B
* (2005) RENAUT, SYDNEY PERCIVAL
* (2004) RENAUT, SYDNEY PERCIVAL
* (1984) RENAUT, SYLVIA MAY
* (1920) RENAUT, WILLIAM

Some of the above are probably children/dau inlaws of William
