1911 - have to admit I haven't really tried on ancestry - I gather that if you use the free search on fmp you can then somehow use the results to browse ancestry. I have so few left in UK by 1911 - I think I bought some pay to view on fmp when 1911 was first available & have searched it very little since. When Ancestry has a full index I will probably look for some more distant family.

UK/Oz mail is amazing - seems so much better than our local postage much of the time :D

Hello All,

I haven’t yet seen the Ancestry version of England/Wales 1911, but if you’re a cheapskate like me or just plain impoverished you can get a decent amount of free information from:

The index at the so-called official 1911 census web site.
http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx?5

This site about how to find other residents and more.
http://www.1911census.org.uk/1911search.htm

Good old FamilySearch which will give you a place of birth.

Hi Tracey,
The "old search" is definitely the way to go-- the new search makes my head spin.

I have had some luck with the 1911 census by doing the following:

1) Search for the surname in the 1911 summary books-- only the surname, since often the summary books just say "Mr" or "Mrs" (or sometimes "Reverend") and no forename.

2) If you are lucky enough to find the household, you can then browse through the 1911 census images and find the page by doing the following: When you are in the summary books database and have found the page, look up at the top and see the path that Ancestry thinks you have taken to get there. That will be the county, parish and subdistrict. On the image itself, at the far left, will be the schedule number for each given person, before their name. Note all that down.

3) Go to the 1911 census database and browse the pull down menu at the right. Choose county, civil parish, sub-registration district and enumeration district as already noted. Then guess on the page number by multiplying the schedule number by two (there is a cover sheet and then the actual schedule for each household, so two pages). If you don't end up right on the correct page, then look at the schedule number where you have arrived and guess how many pages further or back you need to go.

Sounds complicated, but once you have done it all will be clear!

Good luck!
Sarah

Hi Sarah

a very succinct answer. Perhaps you should post it up in a 'Searching Ancestry's 191 census database' in the Library. :D
