James Kerr

Post by nelmit » Wed Feb 21, 2007 12:14 pm

Hello again Maureen,

Yes, I had a wee giggle myself when I read the statement.

Anyway not much info as to why he applied but here's the application anyway.

James Kerr 424 Crown Street applied March 1883

Married age 64 a blacksmith protestant born in Stevenson son of James Kerr a labourer and Ann Reid both dead

1st wife Margaret Robertson died 26 years ago
2nd Janet Martin age 61 born Kirkintilloch

Family:
Agnes 34 wife of William Brown engineer in America
Christina 21 born Portugal Street a dressmaker

Inspector's Report:
On visiting this case was informed by wife that the application was made without the knowledge or consent of the family and they did not wish to apply to the Parish being quite able to look after him themselves but that he had got half witted lately and if he applied again to take no notice of him.

He must have gone back at some point There are some notes at the bottom of the page refering to Kilbarchan and Paisley and then his date of death 14.8.90.

Sorry I couldn't find anything on Agnes.

What were her children's names and date/place of birth. I could try under their names.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hello Annette.

Thanks for that.
At least we can get some laughs out of this digging up the past and it is not all gloom.

Agnes and James appeared to have had 4 Children and James Jr is the only one who survived .The other 3 dying in Infancy. Ann & Magaret died in 1826 and William 1833
and I have found a mention of a headstone erected in Stevenston in their memory .

James, husband of Agnes was a Seaman and I have never found a death for him.James the son ,was a baker who moved to Glasgow and I have never been able to find a death for him either .The only likely one turns up with another Wife and family all in the Bakery trade .
I have started to wonder if he was a Bigamist!
James the Grandson, also a Baker moved to England so I am [sigh] ing

Hello Maureen,

I found this James McNaught, baker in 1881.

Jas. MACNAUGHT W 54 M Stevenson, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Lodger
Occ: Baker

Could this be your James or were all the family born in Glasgow??
Good chance he may also have applied to the poorhouse so I'll have a look.

Kind regards,
Annette M

It sounds like the correct one as the age ties in , circa 1826 although I have not found a Birth Cert for him
I wonder why I did not find him on 1881 as I have been searching for some time for him.
He married Jane McGill and had 6 Children all Born in Hutcheston / Tradeston areas of Glasgow.
Jane his Wife died in Hutcheston December 1874.
All the Family right down to my Husband (who's family this is) where born in Glasgow.
I shall go and download the 1881 Census of S P.

Cheers ,
Maureen

Hi Annette,
I uplifted the 1881 Census for him under that wild card spelling .
Now that was an interesting find.
It appears that James is with his Son George at the MODEL Lodging House and what a busy place that seems to be with so many people there. I can only try to imagine what their life must have been to end up there.

George is the Grand Father to my Husband.

Many, Many, thanks for that lead I would never have found him.

Cheers ,
I think it would be the fact he is entered as MACNAUGHT.
