The inability of some people to use the correct pronunciation of "Eaglesham", even when they know how and why it should be pronounced the way it is, is a constant irk to me. There is no "shhhh" sound! "Eagles-ham" or "Eaglais-ham" means the churches - settlement/village... (there were rather a lot of churches for a small village)
If anyone is having difficulty with the pronunciation, simply pronounce it as if there is no letter "H", i.e.... Eaglesam!..... That would probably be close enough!

This may not be the correct forum to raise this point, but I think i will!
The beautiful "conservation" village of Eaglesham seems constantly to be under threat by developers. It seems they are intent on surrounding the village on all sides with New Housing. Where it was once difficult/impossible to get permission to build in East Renfrewshire/Glasgow's Greenbelt or in a Conservation Area, it now seems rather easy to obtain such permission. Why is this?
A more cynical person than I, might think something is rotten in the State of East Renfrewshire Council, Barrhead!
Someone less trusting than I, might think that anything can be gotten, if 30 pieces of silver are available!
A person lacking faith, unlike myself, might believe that certain people in those "corridors of power" lack the required integrity and/or intellect to exact their power in a fair and unbiased manner.
Yes, many people would like to live in Eaglesham. The schools in the area are always top of ratings, crime stats are always low and the area, in general, is a beautiful place to live and raise a family....... If they keep building New Housing, to enable all those who so wish,to live there...then, there are those who might suggest, that all these positive things are likely to change drastically, and the Eaglesham those people wanted to be a part of, would cease to exist!
Bigger isn't necessarily better! Go and build your new houses elsewhere!(Or would they be more difficult to sell... and less profitable?)

Hi 47p2,

Good story. I would like to hear more of Eaglesham, the home of some of my ancestors since the early 19th century. :D

Thanks for sharing your great memories with us.

I don't know if there's a connection here but Eaglesham History Society has a letter dated 28th October 1947 addressed to Miss M McDermid at 2 Montgomery Street 1947. The letter is regarding an addition to the Coal Distribution Order 1941 to controlled premises at 2 Montgomery Street.

Best wishes,

Kenneth

Hi Carol,

I recently discovered that there are two Garden Cottages in Montgomery Square!

The original is indeed at no. 3 but the other at no. 7 was renamed Garden Cottage later in the 20th century.

Montgomery Square used to be known as High Street and and thought to have been renamed some time after the planned village was laid out in 1769 although not exactly known when. The Backrow reference to Montgomery Square in the cencus returns appears to be colloquial but not an official name.

Best wishes,

Kenneth

Since I live in Alabama and have never been to Eaglesham, I can't answer your question, but I had relatives living at Garden Cottage, #3 Montgomery Square around 1925! When I found this out I did some googling and found an article about the historical commission trying to save some of the houses in Eaglesham. I don't have the article, but I think I was just doing a general search for Eaglesham.

Do you know if later generations of your relatives stayed there after 1861? Would be fun if your relatives and mine were saying "Hello" to each other when they were out walking later on!

Carol :D
