Tar! I forgot about that

Many happy hours spent squelching around in bare feet in the melted tar on the pavements. Does that mean the summers were hotter 'back then' or just a poor quality tar being used?

Obviously it was a fate worse than death to get any on your shoes (or your new Clark's sandals with the wee half daisy on the front). I seem to remember the only thing that would take it off was butter or margarine rubbed in when sitting up at the edge of the 'big' sink getting washed before bedtime.

David McCallum like me was born in Clydebank & I used to love "The Man From Uncle" & not forgetting-"Your Mission should you chose to accept it-Mission Impossible" long before Tom Cruise was a gleam in his Daddy's eye.
TV was two channells & if you had been watching something gripping the night before chances were your friends had too.Now there are multiple channels with nowt much to watch.
If my Granny was visiting & didn't like the TV we were watching it would be
"Oh they can't sing ,give me Moira Anderson & Kenneth McKellar anytime"-
although she used to giggle & sing along to a gyrating Rod Stewart.
The ultimate put-down"That's an insult to your intelligence"
She could tell you the plot line & every characters name on "I never watch this"& the name of every footballer in every team although" I wouldn't give football the time of day"

Oh I loved children's TV -"Noddy","The Woodentops" "Andy Pandy".

Cresotte which I got on my brand new dress from my Aunt in US.I shouldn't have been wearing it to play.Hiding right at the back of the cupboard & hoping it wouldn't be found-it was a skirt with braces & a petticoat with a blouse top worn underneath.Mum found it weeks later & I can still remember her look of disappointment as I had lied about it.She managed somehow to do a " rescue job" on it. The smell of cresotte takes me right back to Quarryknowe St.

Wow. Some of those bring back memories. I may be young but I do remember them .

When I was young me and my cousins always used to go to my nana's house (only round the corner, so not far) and the good times we had that just don't seem to happen these days. I remember the Icy (Ice cream van) coming round and nana would always give us a few pence to go out and get some sweets. I don't really see any ice cream vans these days, which is a shame. And I do remember the Fry's chocolate bars, personally loved the mint and the orange ones.

We also used to go over the park (a large open field behind the house) and mess around. We even tried to make kites out of ASDA poly bags and run down the hill making them fly. Did anyone else ever try this?

Sometimes I went around on Sundays just so I could get a read of the Sunday Post and catch up on The Broons and Oor Wullie.

My nana's was like a central hub we all used to meet up there and play. After school I would get home and drop my stuff off and head round there.

I remember quite a few of the TV programs that were on, He Man, Sooty, Byker Grove etc. Great fun watching them.

Did anyone every play a game called Kerby. Basically one person on each side of the kerb and throwing the ball to hit others kerb and if it did you could get another shot.

Andy you can't be very old with those memories? Ice Cream vans and Fry's creams still readily available. Kerby I am sure is still played along with three and in, World Cup and Wa'y (or however you would spell it Wally) I remember when Asda opened in Coatbridge and Blantyre people would travel on the free buses from Bellshill to go to these new fangled supermarkets now you can't go a mile without seeing one.

Ice cream vans, on the whole, are only found around council house areas! One always drives straight past my Dad's area [bungalows] but stops up the street where the cooncil hooses start

Coal fires are alive and well in my village - we have no mains gas. Nothing beats it ! and even though coal is going up a bit in price it's nothing compared to the hikes in Gas and electric bills.

Kerby is harder to play - too many cars parked in the streets!

Germoline is still used [too frequently] in my house of small boys with skint knees - though it's in a tube not a wee round tin. Can't get it in Aus. so my sister went home with a tube, if she feels nostaligic she has a sniff!!!!

Tizer is still in the shops too.

The Rag and Bone man has been updated. Instead of a horse and cart [yes I do remember them being stabled in the lane behind our Ibrox tenement] coming round the street the children now take the old clothes, outgrown or out worn, to school and the RAG BAG van collects them and gives the school hard cash in return!

Think Andy (Pandabean) and I are of the same vintage! See my earlier post for my thoughts on Kerby - they should make it a Commonwealth sport in time for Glasgow 2014.

Andy, do you remember another game played at school - called Dripe? A bit like squash, but with more players - you used a tennis ball, threw it off a large wall, involved a lot of throwing the ball at people. Brilliant game!!!!!

Perhaps this should be a new thread, alternative Commonwealth games events? What was the name of the game where you threw coins at a wall and the one nearest to the wall kept the rest of the coins?
