My best guess is the the coft is a mis-transcribed loft. No room was wasted there - looks like everywhere from the cellar to the loft was inhabited.

Felix Garvie's death can be found next-door to Dundee in Liff and Benvie in 1894.

At Felix's 1856 marriage (registered in 1857), neither of his parents are marked as deceased. William was one of the witnesses.

From Felix's marriage certificate, you get the mother's maiden surname.
Using that maiden surname, you can find the mother's death certificate (1867). James, the widower, was the informant.
James's death certificate is reasonable to find. There are only two adult deaths for a James Garvie in Dundee between 1867 and 1900 (reasonable guess for latest year).
James's death certificate reveals that he re-married after the death of Felix and William's mother. Wife #2 was the informant at his death registration.
Neither son was a witness at James's second marriage. marriage.

The parents' names found in these certificates support Sarah's 1851 census find given in her post above this one.

All the best,

Hi C
what/where are the LDS discs?
The LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, or Mormon Church) publish a full transcription of the 1881 census on a series of CD ROMs. This set can either be purchased directly from them, or most decent sized libraries who have some family history data will have it for consultation. It is not quite so relevant for those searching for folk in England or Wales as the 1881 for England and Wales is freely available on the LDS web site, (www.familysearch.org) but for Scotland it is quite useful as any online source of the 1881 for Scotland costs money!
Is there a way to get birth certificates and things from Ireland online?
It is not quite so straightforward to search for BMDs for Ireland; we have a list of links for Ireland here:

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks again everyone.

I bought the census image for 1861 to double-check if it's a loft but I can't see an address on it. Do I buy the previous pages to see if it's on there? Also, in the 'condition' column what abbreviations can be used there? Everyone else has mar but William has what looks like widr. Widower?

Sarah what did you search for to find William on the 1851 census in Dundee? I've had a look but I'm not getting any results (either on SP or Ancestry). I then did a Scotland-wide search on SP and have 22 results but none of them are in Dundee as far as my (appalling) geography can tell!

I got Felix's marriage entry. His wife's name seems to be Ma. Is that even a name?

Ahh I'm sorry for all the questions, I promise I'll get better at this someday!

Hi C,

Ma seems to be short for Martha - which can be found on some of their other documents.

They can be found by looking for William Garvey. That finds the son, but not the father, who is on the same page, but must be transcribed differently.

All the best,

Hi Andrew and C,
The father is transcribed James Garvey, and comes up fine when I search... not sure why he is hiding from you, Andrew. Head of household is Elisabeth Holden.

All the best,
Sarah
