Ruxtons in Australia ** birthday bumped post **

Trying to follow this family forward, only one of James and Clementina's children seems to have survived to continue the line. This was Thomas Bolton Sola AKA Alfred Thomas Solly. He married Emma Louisa ____ and had at least three sons in Queenstown, County Cork, Ireland before coming back to England. By 1911 only two were still living. The only one I have been able to follow was Edward W H Solly, who went to Australia for his health (Tuberculosis). I downloaded his extensive WWI file from the Mapping our Anzacs site and learned that his full name was Edward William Harold Solly, born 24 Jun 1887. He was discharged from the army when the TB came back, but survived. He is in the electoral rolls in Braddon, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, went back to England for a 6 month visit in 1957, and was last heard of in 1967 when he wrote for his Anzac medal.

So... I know he was married to Barbara at some stage after the war (she shows up on the electoral rolls and also on the ship's list), and assume he died in Australia, but I have no idea if he had any children.

I'm supposing that the best way to find this out is to find an obituary and see if there are any "survived by" children listed? This is getting a bit too recent for discussion on the board, but-- any ideas on where I might find such an obituary, I assume for the Canberra area?

The national library of Australia seems to have an index to the local paper so an email to them may prove more useful

Reading the link - the index may not cover BDMs but given that you have the actual death dates - they may well be able to provide the notice details

Alan probably knows much more than myself about ACT resources, so may know more direct access to information.

I eventually noticed that much of the Canberra Times is online (but only until 1954) A search for "Edward Solly" did not return any hits - but it did come up with this reference

I attempted to work out how to get a copy of same - it seems it could cost some $$ by submitting a direct request. So an email qery might return better results. If it is simply a reference to newspaper notices, they are available on microfilm.

I did call my local state library and they have the Canberra Times on microfilm - so I could certainly check for a death/notice/obit from around the time he died - I don't visit alot but always have a list of things to check, so will add this one.

A further check for "Solly" without the Edward returns many hits on the Beta newspaper site. The first being "An enjoyable evening at the home of Mr and Mrs E Solly". Many references to E W Solly including a picture which is too dark to be recognisable - at the opening of a Legacy conference in 1954 (I'll see if my library microfilm gives a better copy)

He was a surveyor, so that clippings file must be him, although they get the death year wrong (thus proving that he is part of the family, where such mistakes are the norm!)

Thanks Alan. Yes, I did spot that yesterday while looking through the 900+ newspaper references to Solly in the Canberra Times. Probably close to half of them were her tennis results and the other half charity events involving her and/or her husband. They were busy people. Think I spotted a son though, who also became a surveyor, so maybe I'll arrive at some living people one of these days. I would love to know what the family story is about the infamous James Noon Sola. I expect, if they know about him at all, that he is supposed to have died young...

SOLLY, Barbara - members of the Canberra Hospital Auxiliary and friends will be sad to learn of the passing of our loved life member, Barbara. The auxiliary extends its deepest sympathy to her family. She will be sadly missed.

The pictures from earlier papers were not very good scans on the microfilm, but they are better than what was online. If you would like to message me an email address, I will send the scans.

It seems I may well be spending this weekend in Canberra & intend going to the library, so hope to be able to check for any other information.

I gather you found those names in some of the other on line items - gosh - reading the notice for Edward, I was quite convinced there was no family - in all the notices I have family is usually mentioned!

This item consisted of one very small newspaper cutting - which I should have found when I found the death notice (sorry). It is wrongly indexed as 1967 - The item is as follows - in CT 15 Aug 1969 page 7

Legacy Man dies
Mr Edward (Ted) Solly formerly of Braddon, a long standing member of the Legacy Club of Canberra died on Wednesday.
Mr Solly, who is survived by his wife and son, was 82. He served two terms as president of the Legacy club.
During World War I he served in the 1st Division Signals Company. he was a quantity surveyor by occupation
