Re: Why would a family change its name?
Checked Mary Ann Frasers death cert for 1907 and she is named as Mary Condie (Fraser) married to Robert Condie (Brass finisher) and names her parents as well so I know it's the right cert. I had looked at the 1901 census for roert fraser and I thought it was the right one but the 1907 death cert tells me they were all still Condie up til then at least.
Can't tell you all enough just how much I appreciate the help...seriously everyone thank you!!!!

Hi Annette
Had a look at the robert condie for 1940 and I had already seen that one before but it's not the right one, wrong parents names...my robert condie's parents were William Condie and Jane (Jeannie) Orr thanks for the thought though.

Re: Why would a family change its name?
Kirsty,
I am positive the 1901 census is your family. especially as there is no sign of a Condie family that fits.
The details from the 1891 are just too coincidental.
1891 (we know this is definitely your family as Mary Ann's sister Magdalene is with them) -
Robert Coudie 26 born Airdrie
Mary Coudie 22 born Shotts
Magdalene Coudie 10 MO born Airdrie
1901 -
Robt Fraser 34 born Airdrie
Mary Fraser 29 born Shotts
Magdalen Fraser 10 born Hamilton
Most curious is that the children's birthplaces given are different to where they were born.

Re: Why would a family change its name?
Hello again Kirsty,
I've just been re-reading your post and you say your grandfather was George Paterson Condie born 1897. Was he born in Scotland as I'm not seeing a correspnding birth at SP or was he the George Condie born at Cathcart?
The only George Paterson Condie birth I see in Scotland was born in 1870.
Regards,
Annette

Re: Why would a family change its name?
Back again.
A TS census expert found the family in 1911. Look for Magdalene Fraser born 1890 +/- 1 year. There is only one. Robert has shaved another few years off his age and interestingly enough gives his sister's birthplace as his.
I didn't notice this last night but a look at the 1871 & 1881 census shows the George Paterson Condie born 1870 is Robert's half brother. Very sad that he died when he was only 18.
I had a scour through the newspapers looking for anything that would make Robert change his name befre 1901 but couldn't find anything obvious.
More questions I'm afraid but have you found all he births of Robert and Mary's children and were they all registered as Condie?
I hope you've bought some lucky tickets for the Tombola tonight as I think you're going to need all the credits you can get trying to unravel your mystery.
Regards,
Annette

Re: Why would a family change its name?
I'm so pleased that these Frasers in 1911 are likely to be the right family as I could not stop re-reading the entry but had convinced myself they were not right. I've heard of families where people are left a legacy on the understanding that they change their name. Did any of the grandparents or uncles leave a will?

Re: Why would a family change its name?
Kirsty,
I don't know if you are still following up your original query but I know there will be many here at TS who are. The answer has been found and I'm glad to say it doesn't involve murder!!
Robert changed the family name because Mary got the family in to a lot of debt and Robert had to pay out from his wages.
I can't take any credit for discovering this but a huge thanks is owed to the same TS member who found your family in 1911 (and there is no doubt it is them). =D>
I'll PM you and hopefully you stay close enough to Glasgow to follow up the source of the details yourself.
Regards,
Annette

Oh Well Done. I was getting so engrossed in this post and was worried we wouldn't find the answer to the name change mystery.........and it's not my family.
