Here in Iceland, all the bankers worked out a wizard wheeze to get past a pay freeze a couple of decades ago. Because of the possibility of being kept any day in the bank until the books balanced, they suggested they be compensated by the the introduction of a thirteenth month in the year, and no pay rise of course. This was agreed, and is still payed out equally over the year.........
BTW we have no baker´s dozen here, when did it die out in Scotland? Does anyone remember it?

Did it die out? It's alive and well in the weekly markets in France-- possibly only in the smaller towns. But, for example, a dozen eggs will get you 13 in the market, etc. even when it means adding the extra one in a plastic bag because the egg carton only holds 12!

Hi Sarah, good to know that old customs continue at least for a while. I am obviously too young to remember the baker's dozen, but I can just stretch to receiving farthings as change - but only at the baker's.

Whisky may not cure the common cold..
but it fails more agreeably than most other things.

The address is 113 Kirkland St. I have a census sheet from my father's files that shows the Marshall family, including my grandmother at 1 year old, living there. THANK YOU! I'll have to keep in touch with you so when we make our momentous trip I can thank you in person! - Jackie
Hi Jackie

Sorry to report that 113 is no longer standing but the good news is that it is now a children's play area and not a monsterous big motorway. If you like I can photograph the area to let you get a feel for it as there are some parts (my own street included) that are pretty much as they would have been then apart, of course, from the clean up when all the buildings were sand blasted. I'll get them done when the weather clears up a bit as it is blowing gales and raining at this very moment. If you let me have your e-mail address I will forward them to you by attachment.

Regards
