Hi again,
You can order the certs from: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

All the info I found was on Ancestry.com

I haven't found Louisa's maiden surname yet... but not for lack of trying! Too many William Phillips getting married in England...

All the best,
Sarah

These indexes from Free BMD looks like a possible marriage considering who Bertha was living with in 1881 -

Marriages Dec 1878
GRINNALL Louisa Woolwich 1d 1463
Phillips William Henry Woolwich 1d 1463

Annette

I thought if I waited awhile, Annette would find it! Thanks! Although it does seem odd that they were married in the same quarter in which Bertha was born-- and he didn't realize she was pregnant?

Regards,
Sarah

P.S. Wow Annette-- that was fast! I was answering your first post, and by the time I was finished you had erased it and posted another! This new one seems more plausible, possibly.

Ah........but maybe it's not them!!

I don't know how the English indexes work but I assume although this pair are on the same page they may not actually have married each other. :?

There are a few William Phillips on the same page Louisas between 1878 and 1881 I only picked this one because of her surname.

Regards,
Annette

I think it is likely to be correct. On the 1861 census, there is Louisa Jane Grinnall in Dumbleton, where Bertha was in 1881. Looks highly suspicious, anyway!

I too think it's them. Dugald Blair Brown sailed off to the Zulu wars in December 1878.

The only thing that strikes me as strange is the location - Woolwich (if that is the location).

William Henry Phillips was an accountant at the railway works at Gloucester and Louisa was from that area too.

Is there a Woolwich near Gloucester?

And does anyone know, was there an army barracks or hospital in the Cheltenham / Gloucester area around 1878?

According to the censuses, William was born in Hackney, Greater London-- so the location wouldn't be strange for him. What I find interesting is that in all the censuses (that I can find) William and Louisa are in London, yet all the children are born in Gloucestershire. I guess she went home to have her babies!

Sarah

In 1881, living at Gloucester, William states he was born at Colchester, Essex. Can't find it on Family Search but it's there on ancestry - Louisa transcribed as Laura Jane.

Regards,
Annette

Love the outfit Sarah. :)

I think Annette has the right family. The one in Woolwich must be a different family I think. I have the actual census sheet from the 1881 census and Laura is a mis-transcription. It actually says Louisa Jane.
William Hy Phillips' occupation is right - accountant at the wagon works in Gloucester.
What was the maiden surname of that Louisa Jane, I wonder? Is the same one as you found earlier?

But I think the baby Bertha Phillips that you found living with the labourer's family must be her illegitimate daughter.[/img]

Can anyone find the above family in the 1871 census please? I would like to find where William Hy. Phillips was at that time. He would not have been married to Louisa (not Laura) Jane at that time - they married in 1879. He may have been married to someone else, or he may have been a widower.

I've been searching ancestry.co.uk but can't find him.
