Hello everyone,
I would like to ask you for wee help that I am looking for monumental inscription on John Brannan from Montrose, Angus that he died in 1858 or 1859.

I just wanted to know who was John Brannan to see if he was related to my gggg grandfather Edward Brannan who lived in Montrose from 1830's until his death in 1851.

Thank you from Canada
Margaret

Hi Maggie
If John Brannan died in 1858 or 1859, you could maybe find what you need to know about him if you searched for his death on Scotlands People.
His death should give the names of his parents, so that may solve the mystery for you.

Best wishes
Lesley

John Brannan 1858 in Montrose

Post by Maggie64 » Fri Nov 09, 2007 5:16 am

Hi again,
I have checked with Scotlandspeople to find John Brannan's death record in Montrose, 1858. I am afraid that they did not solve the mystery about who was his parents because his death record showed all blank information on his parents but he was listed as married, and his record shows his name as Brannan, John Groom... but I canna read if it was Groom or Groow. He is buried at Rosehill Cemetery same place as my ancestors. He died on May 22 1858 aged 63.

Now I have to look up for his marriage records to see if I can find who was his wife. More mystery on my Brannan family history :(

thanks again,
Margaret

The Angus seacoast MI list has only one Brannan gravestone at Montrose which has Edward Brannan dying aged 55 in 1851, but the stone is "by" his son, also Edward, a seaman lost in the Southern Ocean in August 1858 aged 29. Three other names are mentioned - apologies if you have all this information already - just bought the book and am avidly searching through for my own families.

Hi again,
Thank you for your quick reply I appreciate yes I got that information already also I have been in touch by Montrose Library staff that they cannot find John Brannan in the MI book.

By the way, I went to Scottish Ancestry workshop last weekend in Toronto and I saw 2 old books that was on table booth I had to grab that two books about pre-1855 gravestones inscriptions for Seacoast for Arboroath and Montrose also Kincardineshire which I paid for few dollars. I have new information on my ancestors in Kincardine that is cool. Any advise me where can I buy MI book for Aberdeenshire pre-1855 gravestones inscriptions that I am interested to buy. Please let me know thank you,

Margaret from Canada

or the Scottish Genealogy Society www.scotsgenealogy.com
http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/ ... tions.html
should both have the books you are after.

thank you for some replies wow I will look up that links that is great. Thank you so much.

Is Banff under Aberdeenshire area? or what? Please let me know thank you.

Some of my mum's ancestors came from Banff, (the Soutars/Souters/Sutter). I have managed traced mum's ancestors back to the year 1710 most of them came from Banffshire.

Hope to hear from you again,
Cherrio Margaret

See: http://www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-aberdeen.htm
- showing both Banffshire and Aberdeenshire.

Hope this is of some help in visualising the area.

Best wishes

Hi Margaret,

Banff is in Aberdeenshire on a modern map (post-1997). It was the county town of Banffshire until 1975, then in Grampian Region (Banff and Buchan District) from 1975 until 1997.

All the best,
