Dalbeth Convent and St Peters church, Dalbeth

Post by Yorky » Mon Dec 03, 2007 10:51 pm

Apparantly the convent was created in 1850s ish in what was Dalbeth House. I found this info on the web. The convent was run as a Magdalen Laundry then by the order of the Good Shepherd as a home for unmarried mothers. We now know what horrendous places such institutions were. The convent closed in 1954.
My query concerns the nuns. In the graveyard of St Peters which was adjoining the convent, was an area given over for the burials of the nuns. There is a large memorial to the nuns which lists their names and death dates. A gentlemen I "met" on another site very kindly emailed me a photo he had taken of this memorial purely because it looks rather grand. He was there to photograph some other gravestones for his own research. Unfortunately none of the names visible on the pic are relevant for me.
I would be interested to know if there is a kind Glaswegian who would be prepared to visit the church for me to look at this memorial. I am more than happy to pay any expenses etc incurred. It has been my intention to visit Glasgow this year to do this myself but you know how it is - I haven't got round to it.
I wont go on any more at this stage.

Thanks & cheers

Hello Kathy,

Doesn't look as if anyone can help with your request this time around but hopefully you will get the chance to have a look at the memorial in person before long.

Hello Anne

It is a busy time of year for everyone and the days are very short. I have already decided to make a trip to Glasgow in March as there is other research I need to do there. I will start at Dalbeth as the memorial looks very impressive and it would be good to have my own photos of it. To find a Cairns on the memorial would be great. I would then know where to look next for more family info. If the name is not on the memorial I will have to go through the records which I understand are at the Mitchell library.

Bye for now and a Merry Christmas and a Happy Peaceful New Year to all.

Kathy

Hi Kathy,
Alas I've not been about Glasgow for a wee while, nor will be in the foreseeable future to help.

If you can't wait till March...
...then perhaps contact the Archdiocese of Glasgow on Clyde St.?
I do know they have the burial records of St. Peter's, Dalbeth.
And any time i've phoned them they were more than helpful.
Usually a name & date of death was all that was needed.
So i'd be surprised if they didn't also have note of the names on the nuns' memorial.
No harm in asking!

I have partially surveyed this (rather large) cemetery for the Kennedy One-Name Study so need to go back, I could bring it up the list and take a pic of the memorial if you like. Did you only get part of it before? Not sure if I recall it off hand, its not in my batch of pics I took but that may just be that it didn't have any Kennedys on it.

I have done about 80 cemeteries mostly in Scotland now and there is a list at my website, the numbers show the total Kennedy gravestones if anyone is searching for them.

I am best contacted via the email address shown at my web site.

Hi Iain
Happy New Year...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot. :D

Looks like you've been very busy indeed collecting information about the Kennedy surname- just wish I had some Kennedys in my tree!

Best wishes
Lesley
