institution at 15 St Andrews Street, Glasgow

Post by Lorrih » Sun Feb 10, 2008 12:57 pm

I have found an ancestor in the 1901 census living as an inmate at an institution on 15 St Andrews Street Glasgow. On the front page it is listed as a "family home" and it has matrons, nurses, warders, a fireman as staff. The people who are staying there all appear to have quite good occupations and there are familys living there too. The odd thing is i know this ancestor of mine had a family yet he was living there alone that night so maybe a hospital but cant find anything about it and there is nothing else on the census return that gives any clues. Any ideas anyone?

Here is a photograph of the building from the Virtuall Mitchell

As you can see it's called Family Home. I know there used to be a hospital in St Andrew's Square in the 1860's but whether or not that is the same building I don't know.

Did you look at the free header page or is that where you saw Family Home.

Hopefully sombody else will come along with a better solution.

Kind regards,
Annette

Great minds think alike Lesley.

I drove by the building (still looks the same) 10 minutes ago and it is now council offices.

Lorrih,

If nobody else comes up with anything you could contact The Mitchell Library archives who will have a record of the address.

regards,
Annette

Have a look here:

Scroll about 3/4 down the page.

This was a request of mine on another forum Hidden Glasgow. My interest was because my family spent a number of years at 23 St Andrew's Square, and a discussion of most of its buildings ensued.

Your place seems to have been an orphanage, amongst other things.

Nina reminded me of something I meant to say.

On the valuation rolls it is St Andrew Street.

My relative's husband is also listed at 15 St Andrews Street, I was really puzzled about the nature of the 'institution' but on looking closely i realised that there are alot of men with children staying there and single men. My great great Aunt had just died the year before so Horace Dickie was a widower and I am coming to the conclusion that it was some sort of private home for widowers and their families. It is just a theory though so I will need to dig further...

Hi Dippy Daisies,

[TS_welcome]

The header pages of the 1901 census give us the following information.

Family Home, 15 St Andrew Street, Glasgow.

2 x Officer (1 male and 1 female)
1 x person in Officer's family (1 male)
1 x Assistant Matron (1 female)
5 x Warders (5 males)
15 x Domestic Servant (15 females)
351 x Inmates (243 males and 108 females)
Total: 375 (250 males and 125 females)

The building consisted of 176 rooms with one or more windows.

Make what you will of that.

A while later...

This item from New Zealand's Otago Daily Times of 16 April 1900 describes the "Family Home" in St Andrew Street, Glasgow.

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bi ... --1----0--

On looking at the 1915 valuation rolls, many of the buildings of St Andrew Street are owned by the Corporation of the City of Glasgow (Improvements Department).

All the best,
