HELP NEEDED ON THE ELSTOB FAMILY

Post by ELLEN 44 » Mon Mar 03, 2008 8:01 pm

Hi TS Members could you please help me on the Elstob family me and 4 other members of my family are trying to trace them this is what my 4th cousin found. Any information on them would be great as we same to have come to a dead end with Thomas Elstob and Sarah Potter many thanks Ellen

1. John's parents were Thomas Elstob & Sarah Potter
from (i) John's death cert in 1875 (attached - thanks Ellen!)
(ii) John's marriage cert to Margaret McNair (Figgins) in 1865
2. Thomas & Sarah were both deceased at the time of John's wedding to
Margaret in 1865
2. The merchant service records say that John was born in London in
1817. The Scottish census records say he was born in England and was 40
in 1861 & 50 in 1871, suggesting a birth date in 1820 or 1821.
3. The merchant service records also say John lived in Glasgow when not
employed as a seaman.

Our problems are:
1. We can't find Thomas or Sarah on a census for Scotland or England
2. We don't know when Sarah & Thomas died, other than they were
deceased by John's marriage to Margaret in 1865.
3. We don't know what country they died in - England or Scotland
4. We don't have marriage certs for John's first two marriages as they
were before official registration took place in in 1855, and the parish
registers for those two marriages do not show parents names.
5. We can't find John's birth in London between 1817-1821
6. Registration of BMD did not start in England until September 1837.
The IGI has no record of an Elstob marrying Sarah Potter between 1800
and 1820, but that is not conclusive as the IGI is not complete for London.

John was born in London but that is not necessarily an indication that
is where Thomas & Sarah were married, nor is it an indication that Sarah
was still alive at the time of the census records and that Thomas had
not remarried.

Hi Ellen
Thomas & Sarah were both deceased at the time of John's wedding to
Margaret in 1865
Where did this marriage take place: Scotland??

There are several Thomas Elstob deaths in England prior to 1865 on Freebmd: South Shields, Camberwell & Stokesley - no ages given, so no way of knowing if they are likely.

Best wishes
Lesley

Have you looked at the Elstob info on Rootsweb - seems to be the same family, so someone this person may have more info. Users name is "winterwolf" (just do a search for Thomas Elstob in the family trees section)

Name: Thomas ELSTOB, wife Sarah Potter
Sex: M
Birth: ABT 1800 in England
Occupation: Ships Carpenter

They seem to have John's birth as abt 1821 England, Occupation: harbour Master, and his four wives as:
1 Grace CAMPBELL b: ABT 1822 in Rothsay, Buteshire (SP says marriage was 1849)
2 Elizabeth GARDINER b: 1824 in Scotland? (SP says marriage was 1844)
3 Margaret CAIRNS b: ABT 1840 in Ayr, Scotland, Married: 13 JUN 1865 (SP agrees with your McNair, not Cairns)
4 Margaret FIGGINS b: ABT 1845 in Scotland (Not seeing an Elstob/Figgins marriage on SP)
Children are given for some of the above marriages

As always, best to check out these details - they may not be correct.
Best wishes
Lesley

p.s. if you then do a search for John Elstob on Rootsweb, you'll find someone else interested in him too.
