Hello Jack

It looks like Adeline to me, but can you say under which column it is entered, this may only be the informants name!

Hi Jack:

Welcome to TalkingScot [scotland-flag]

16.....David Cobbel.....44 Age.....14 March.....of Adeline (place name)

David Cobbel _____ in which the C'oed was ___ in present of the ____ stone ______

Based on the section above, where it says 'the back of John Huntter Stone', could it be the location where he was buried, with 16 the day of interment?

Sometimes more of the document will provide clues to solving the writing. If you wanted to upload a larger part of the document that might help with the deciphering.

Hi Jack,

Here is my interpretation of that section of document.
  • 16 ¦ David Cobbel ¦ 44 Age ¦ 14 March ¦ of Adeline ¦
    David Cobbel ground in which
the dec'd was laid in front of
the Stone House of Thomas T Stone
    South sect of that ground
I'm not convinced that is right, but it is the best that I can make of it just now.

All the best,

AndrewP

Death by Adeline

Post by jackroyd » Fri Mar 21, 2008 4:29 pm

Sorry folks, In my boyish enthusiasm to get this (finally) posted I neglected to mention that the cause of death is listed in this burial book as Adeline.

The column lists all the causes only.

Its the figuring out of what Adeline could mean that is driving us mad !

Hi Jackroyd:

You'll find several links to archaic medical sites at http://rmhh.co.uk/medical.html

I preferred Dr. Paul Smith's reference, but can no longer access it, which I see has been noted on the page.

The Dictionary of the Scots Language says that this word is or is related to ADILL - putrid discharge

None of the olde medical terms sites covered this.

I thank you all far taking time to help this poor sinner on the pretty wet coast of Canada

Cheers

Jack who says TS should have a link to this excellent resource
