Timeline in Excel

Post by Pandabean » Tue Apr 08, 2008 12:42 pm

Hey all,

I was browsing the web the other day looking for how to make timelines in Excel and came across the following site

http://www.vertex42.com/ExcelArticles/c ... eline.html

Here you can see a step by step walkthrough and even download a template. Also there are are examples of other timeline types on the site.

One thing you have to be wary about is that some of the sheets are not free and there is a bit of advertising on the site.

I have been playing around with it for a little while but I am having trouble making the timeline monthly. What I get its two Jans at the start of the timeline with a month missed out further on. If anyone has any suggestions let me know :D.

Hope you find them useful. :)

That’s interesting Andy,

I haven’t given much thought to timelines but I can see the possibilities for when I finally get around to writing some sort of a history of anything. Is there any way of getting one of those into a Word document? Looks like you can make some sort of a timeline in Word according to this page but is it as good, easier said than done, or just too basic? I might leave it till I need it.

Thanks,

Hi Alan,

Sorry for the delay in replying.

You can create a timeline in most programs. One that is really good is Adobe Illustrator, good for making diagrams.

As for taking the chart into word, it is possible. You just have to select the chart and right click > copy. There are settings somewhere which can allow for dynamic updating so that when you update the spreadsheet it updates the chart in there as well as the one in word. Quite handy if your writting a history and you need to add extra facts.

Regards,
Andy

Thanks Andy,

That’s okay, it’ll be a while before I get around to it. I have Corel Draw which I think is similar to Illustrator and will give it a try in that. I’ll refer back to your post when the time comes.

Thanks again,

Alan

Am I right in thinking that the Excel one is the only one that automatically places all the data once you've created the spreadsheet? The Word one just looks as if you draw a line and add a load of text boxes with data in them which you have to type each time.
