How to describe a relationship?
A wee poser.
Alison is the Great Grand-daughter of John and Henrietta. When Henrietta died, John remarried. Margaret is the Grand-daughter of John's second marriage. What would you say is the precise name for the relationship between Alison and Margaret?
Many thanks to anyone with a spare moment to help me work it out.

Re How to describe a relationship?
Hi Anne,
I work out the relationship as ½ 1st Cousin once Removed.
Try a google for "Relationship chart" - there are many results!
Or for "Half cousin relationship chart" for eg -

Some charts are easier to understand than others - so look at a few.

Just to complicate things further, I think she is the half great grandniece once removed.

Re How to describe a relationship?
Hi Andrew,
My GF (born 1857) married twice so i looked at a gr-daur from his first marriage.
And her relationship to a gr-gr-daur of his second marriage.
The calculator in Legacy gave them as being Half 1C 1R*
The once removed (1R*) because the girls are on a different generation level.
What do you think?
Cheers - Jack

Hi Jack,
Thinking out loud...
1st generation:- John and wife #1 and wife #2
2nd generation: half-siblings (John's children)
3rd generation: half-(first)-cousins (John's grandchildren, inc. Margaret)
4th generation: half-second-cousins (John's great grand-children, inc. Alison)
End of thinking out loud...
So, yes I see it now, they are half-first-cousins-once-removed.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re How to describe a relationship?
Hi Andrew,
I like your "Thinking out loud".
A sensible approach; i should use it myself!
The Relationship Calculator in Legacy is very useful...no need to enter two names.
It automatically gives relationships to your selected source whenever you look at another name.
Normally i use myself as the Source, but you can easily select any name you want, and change it as often as you like.
But if you've got, say, two rellies on different lines marrying...
...and they are on different generations to you (which has happened to me at least 3 times)...
...then children are differently related to you depending on which family line you are looking at...
For eg, my 2C 2R Joseph (his mother my 1C 3R) married my 1C 3R Margaret (her mother my GGG Aunt).
Their children in Legacy are as my 2C 2R... [sic]
But Joseph's siblings' children are my 3C 1R...
Seems the nearer related rellie to you takes precedent when deciding the relationship in Legacy.
So that's why Joseph is my 2C 2R, and his children are also as my 2C 2R.
Confused me for quite a while as i was new to Fam Hist at the time, then the penny eventually dropped....
Cheers - Jack

Hi Jack

Could not agree more - it is a great feature. The Relationship Calculator in Legacy is very useful...no need to enter two names.
I'll believe you - way too late to take that on board!!! Cousins marrying cousins always seems to introduce an element of confusion to software! The new Legacy charting program seems to just duplicate the two family lines which helps in some ways but not in others. But if you've got, say, two rellies on different lines marrying...
