No informant on birth record

Post by Dennis » Sat May 03, 2008 8:41 pm

Hi:)

Have an 1855 birth record with no informant signature or mark in column 7, just a registrar's signature and a note that the mother was the informant. Can anything be inferred from the omission of any signature or mark by the mother, she was single.

All the best. dennis

Sticking my neck out here but I am assuming that the Registrar was less than
confident with the new legislation??
Maybe he hadn't dealt with a lot of illegitimate births??

Hi Dennis

If you purchased the certificate through GRO online, you are getting a copy of a copy. The original registration was done in a district office & every three months copies were made and sent to the Central Office - so as mentioned by Joette the registrar, when making the copy probably didn't bother with the name & simply listed the informant as the mother. I doubt it would have related to whether or not the child was legitimate.

If you obtained a copy from the district office (which will be a copy or transcript of the original) it may contain the mother's name or mark, or again, this may not have been recorded.

Until I understood the English system I was intrigued by the comment on a couple of certificates I had which said
"Certified to be a true copy of an entry in the certified copy of a register of births ..."
