Where to go?

Post by DorothyCoe » Fri Jul 18, 2008 10:34 pm

I've arranged to go to the North East (Banff) for a few days. My McCurrachs and Mackies are centred around this area, from Portsoy and Cullen to Rothiemay and Huntly. My Milnes are from Cruden Bay area.

Does anyone know what specific resources and places I should aim to include on my visit ?

I know that a lot of you will have made similar trips to your own areas, so what do you suggest as preparations I should make to get the most information in the time I have? Should I concentrate on just one name, or combine them?

Thanks

Hi Dorothy
I can't advise on the area, but can only suggest that you take any info you think you might need whish is relevant to any and all families you have in the area. I cannot count the number of times I've taken what I think I need, only to have something turn up which, inevitably, is relevant to a branch I for which I have brought no info at all!!

Oh, and a good OS map if you are looking to pinpoint farms or small villages.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thank you Lesley.
Yes I'm going to buy a big scale map when I get there.
And sensible advice about all my bits and pieces being porentially useful.

As well as a modern map of the area, try to get old maps too, if you can't print any off the internet try the main libraries in the area , they should have maps that theey can photocopy for you at a small price.

If you have time do go into Sandend - my favourite place in the North. It's tucked down the hill between Portsoy and Cullen, the old village will give you a taste of what life was like years ago, and the Pill boxes and anti-tank blocks are still in evidence from the '40's.

Oh and it might be advisable to brush up on your Doric or you may miss half of what the locals say!

Enjoy your trip
Wilma

Dorothy

If you've not already gone on your trip, I wonder if you've had a look at the community web site for Cruden Bay?

The other links might prove useful and a bit a background to the area.

Hi Dorothy

I really hope you enjoy your visit and that the weather is OK. I've a cousin lives up in that area and it always seems to be drier, but colder than it is for us down here in the tropical south west ...

It depends on the information you want to find out - the Aberdeen & North East Family History Society, on King Street in Aberdeen might be a good place to start depending on what you want to know.

My advice is to take all the information you have about the people from the area with you - there is nothing worse than going to do some research and realising that you've left a certificate or list of dates behind.

Also, take a note of usernames and passwords you have for any sites like ScotlandsPeople and whatnot just in case there's something you need to check.
