Hi Liz
The census is on SP (index and original images) and also can been searched on Ancestry and Freecen (not complete yet, I don't think)
That would seem a good place to start. The IGI is good as a finding aid: you need to be careful as to whether what you have seen there is an Extract or a Submission. But either way you really need to see the original entries to comfirm, and often the original entries also contain a little more information which can help.
If he died after 1855 in Scotland, his death will also be there on SP, so that is another angle to try.
Best wishes
Lesley

The James in question appears to have 2 siblings:
JOHN WALKER
Birth: 13 MAR 1820
Christening: 24 MAR 1820 Croy And Dalcross, Inverness, Scotland
Father: WM. WALKER Mother: ANNE FRASER
Extracted birth or christening record
ISOBELLA WALKER
Birth: 02 JUN 1822
Christening: 11 JUN 1822 Croy And Dalcross, Inverness, Scotland
Father: WM. WALKER
Mother: ANNE FRASER
Extracted birth or christening record
Their names may help narrow things down a little, or thier marriage info could assist in the future.
