School Drill Instructor?

Hi All,

First let me say hello to all as I've been absent for a while. I'm afraid I took a bit of a scunner to all this lark and gave myself a break for a while. I would akin it to an overdose. I had to get back to the 21st Century for a wee while, but I'm fine now. :wink:

So back to business.

I've just unearthed a death cert. for a GGG Aunt's son, which gives his deceased father's occupation as having been a 'School Drill Instructor". His father spent many years in the Cameron Highlanders, and he was born on the Isle Of Wight where his father had been stationed. His fathers death cert has occupation as 'Army Pensioner'.

Now comes the possibly stupid question. :oops: Could his father have been a 'School Drill Instructor' or should this say 'Drill School Instructor'. The reason I ask is because, until I saw this cert., I had forgotten that when I was really small, probably early primary school years, we went to drill, and in later years it became gym. Is this my imagination, or was it originally called 'drill'?.

This may sound a bit silly, but did he 'drill' school children or soldiers. There's a little bit of a difference.

If anyone is still with me, and hasn't lost the will to live over this, give me your thoughts.

Hi Christine, Welcome back to talkingscot. Good to have you with us again. I laughed at your first sentence........I haven't heard the word scunner in many many years........great word.

When I went to school we went to drill class and not gym class......but then I'm quit OLD :lol: :lol:

Glad to hear you've dried out and are back to some sort of normality! I think a lot of us will be able to empathise. :D

School drill is described at the Glasgow Story.

I remember drill instruction when I went to the Girl's Guildry. We had to practise for Sunday Parade through the streets of Govan. It went something like this............FORWAAAAARD MARCH- left, (right),Left, (right),Left, (right).........LEEEEEFT TURN, left, (right),Left, (right),Left, (right).........RIIIIIGHT TURN, left, (right),Left, (right),Left, (right).........COMPANNNNY HALT, ATTENNNNNSHUN. At ease. There were lots other instructions to do all sorts of other fancy things - I loved it.

Yes, I remember it being 'drill' in primary school, but - more sophisticatedly(!) - 'gym' in secondary.

Perhaps he was both - drilled Soldiers in the army and then school-kids when he left the army.

Maybe we could do with some ex-army PE teachers in the gym blocks - my daughter mentioned that the idea was put forward that the PE dept should buy some nintendo Wiis to encourage the unsporty children to excercise :roll:

Whit happened to the 'Out on the hockey field regardless of the weather' or even if you could see the pitch through the fog?! [rant]

It was pure hell and I hated it!! So much so, that I started playing squash on a Saturday morning in order to avoid it, and when asked to play in the school team again, I said I was sorry but I couldn't manage because I was playing squash that Saturday. The gym teacher went "utter ballistic" and finished her tirade shouting about two inches from my face "...AND YOU WILL NEVER PLAY FOR THE SCHOOL TEAM AGAIN!!!!!"
...I looked sombre, but inside a wee voice was shouting "Oh, YES, YES, YES!!!!" Fantastic result, and well worth the bawling.... \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

I have not been anywhere near a hockey pitch since.....
