Location? St.Rollox PH; Airds Lane Gallogate?.....

Post by GTSCOT » Thu Jul 14, 2005 2:40 am

I have a St. Rollox PH record. The homeless applicants address was entered as 206 Gallogate- but was "found" in Airds Lane. Died 2 days after admission April 1881. I'm trying to locate Airds Lane on old maps but can't find it.
Anyone know where it was. ? I'm also not quite sure where the PH was.
thanks

Hi GTSCOT

I wonder if the DOD was before or after the 1881 census?...Since that was supposedly completed the 3rd and 4th of April I'm assuming they may have died after being enumerated.....

These were the families living at 206 Gallowgate on that census:

Note that in 1881 206 Gallowgate address was included in Volume 644-4 which was Calton....while Airds Lane was found in Volume 644-7 which was Blythwood. Meanwhile St. Rollox District was found in Volume 644-6. Maybe this info will help you pinpoint the locations on a map of that era?....or maybe even pinpoint some family connections?

Best wishes
Jean

According to Susan Miller's "A Guide To Glasgow Addresses: Part I 1700 - 1825: Merchant City" Aird's Lane ran N-S from Bridgegate down to Goosedubs.

Davie

PS Poor law provision in Glasgow was originally divided between 4 city parishes, City, Barony, Govan, and Gorbals.

The City Poorhouse on Parliamentary Road was erected in 1809 originally, as a lunatic asylum. With 1,500 beds it was one of the largest institutions in Britain. Poor conditions and overcrowding led to closure in 1905, and merger with Barony.

Barony Poorhouse opened in 1853 and was described in 1882 as “a very capacious asylum for the children of poverty and well adapted by its cleanliness, ventilation and position to mitigate the ills of their condition”. On merger with City it was enlarged and became Scotland’s largest.

The relevant addresses in the 1881 census are, -

"The City Parish Poor House" 322 Parliamentary Road
(see http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/ ... sgow.shtml for location and other details)
"Barnhill Poorhouse" Barnhill (Barony) (See http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/ ... rony.shtml for location and other details)
"Govan Combination Poorhouse Hospital Asylum"
(see http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/ ... ovan.shtml and other details)
Gorbals never built a poorhouse.

Thanks Jean & David for the help. I found Airds Lane which is still on current maps. Also found a picture at the Mitchell Photo archives.
My subjects DOD was April 22nd, and I never thought of looking for him in the 1881 Census, although I did find some of his family. If he was "homeless" it likely will be a challenge. I'll take another look at that Census. I don't have the 1881 LDS disc set, but I'm going to order it since it's so reasonably priced.
The Death Registration identified the PH as City PH in the District of St. Rollox, which likely confused me. Thanks again for your help.
