Dear all - is there anybody with access to Edinburgh's Calton Hill MIs?
I'm looking for some Leith families - the names are Philp or Philip, Imrie, and Cunningham, possibly Couts.
Times of interest - Philp (various spellings) throughout the 18th c. into early 19th. The dates I have for deaths are
Philp - Thomas Philp, tailor, 1772, Thomas Philp, shipmaster (his son) 1777 overseas. No date of death for other children but these would include son John Philp, tailor, possibly around 1800.
Imrie - Margaret Imrie, wife of elder Thomas Philp - after 1772.
James Philip - carpenter - after 1820, and his wife Mary Bell.
It's quite possible they are in the Old Calton Hill cemetery, though of course finding a MI is another matter!
A bit more speculative - Cunninghams and Couts. (While some of this family are buried in St Cuthberts and in Greyfriars, there may also be Calton burials and just possibly MIs.)
Cunningham - Marion, wife of John Philp - possibly around 1800...
her father Patrick Cunningham, wright - possibly 1783
Couts - Agnes, Wife/Widow of Patrick Cunningham.
In case you have the Calton MIs - please let me know if there's a sign of any of them!
Jenny

Hello Jenny,
Is this the book you are talking about?
http://www.gould.com.au/Scottish-MI-Edi ... scg098.htm
You would have to be very lucky to have an entry there. It’s claimed to be “a record of all known pre 1855 accessible inscriptions in Old Calton and New Calton Burial Grounds”. Yet there are only about “1000 monuments and about 5000 names mentioned in this volume”. This must be only a tiny fraction of the total burials.
Your family would have had to have been better off than most to be able to afford a memorial and then there’s the ravages of time and all the great bites that have been taken out of the burying ground and used for various purposes.
Maybe if someone has the book they will be able to check.
One good thing is that the OPR Deaths will be on SP hopefully not too long in the future and South Leith Parish is about as good as it gets for that record type.
There have been so many photos taken of the burial ground you would think there would be a photo of just about every inscription posted on the internet somewhere. http://www.flickr.com/search/?s=int&q=% ... %22&m=text
All the best,
Alan

Let's just hope it's not North Leith... records for there are not good with a big gap for deaths around the late 1700s!
Could they perhaps be buried in North or South Leith, or do you know for certain they are in Calton Hill? Another posssible location is Rosebank; there are good number of Leith folk in there.
Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks - I have the Leith (north and south) MIs, though have heard that not all MIs are in there. Indeed I'm hoping for the burials, though they probably will not give much information. The MIs were a long shot - few people had them, fewer are legible, but sometimes one finds interesting things - and it's a matter of trying everything here.
If anybody has Rosebank - I'd value hearing if there's anything there!
What I have here are two Leith families of Philip or Philp, one with son James Philp born 1779, one with father James Philp of around the same age, both families being those of craftspeople, the children's births witnessed by craftspeople and shipmasters - I am hoping for something which may demonstrate or disprove a connection, but it's a long shot and I may never know. As Leith people they could be buried in several places. (Several children of 'my' James Philip, dying in childhood, are known to be buried in South Leith in the wrights' ground.)
