Link for free church photographs in Scotland

Post by Glen TK » Sat Nov 08, 2008 4:15 pm

Hi to all on the forum, my first post which hopefully may prove useful for anyone wanting photographs of churches/chapels and some information about the buildings.

I regularly use the Family Tree Forum website, part of the site has been set up as a genealogical wiki and within that section there is a project called "Places of Worship". Members submit images they have taken, all images displayed in the project can be copied freely from the site. Scotland coverage is patchy at present but improving all the time.

I am a co-ordinator within the project, typically that involves adding images to the project but the Scotland entries also have hyperlinked "talk" pages with some information and historical details about many of the buildings featured.

My own collection of photographs mainly covers the Berwickshire and Roxburghshire areas and includes interior images where access into a building is possible, something around 160 images in total. In addition i also have several images from the English side in the Berwick and North Northumberland areas too.

The main page for the project (England, Wales and Scotland) can be found at;

http://www.familytreeforum.com/wiki/ind ... of_Worship

Simply click on the name of any county to access the parish listings and images. Please feel free to copy any images of interest and if anyone would like copies of the additional images i have then please get in touch.
Images from the site are usually 640x480 pixel, images from my own collection can be either 640x480 or approx 2000x3000 pixel (roughly 2MB) files.

Happy hunting and if the images you need aren't there yet check back from time to time, the project is updated regularly.

Hi Glen

Welcome to Talking Scot [talkingscot] . Thanks for all of your hard work on this. I'll have fun browsing your images and looking for the Churches where my borderers may have worshipped.

Anne

PS Love your user name on the other site. Bit uncomfortable I would think

Post edited Tues 30th Dec to reflect the newly created database.

A database of photographs listing the Parish/Church name is being compiled at present, it should be fully up to date in the next two weeks. Although incomplete the database is online, updates can be added without pulling the listing off the internet so you can easily check the latest list at any time. Selecting a county from the list will bring up the results for that particular county.

The database can be found at http://www.familytreeforum.com/wiki/ind ... I_Scotland

Thankyou Anne.

Several other counties do have a limited number of submissions, the project is still in the early stages but Inverness-shire has quite a few images and the borders area has quite a few. As time progresses then it should get better and better though to be fair it seems there is a lack of digital cameras north of the border at times!!

If anyone has any images they have taken and would like to add to the project then please feel free to contact me (he says rather hopefully!!). The main objective is to have another resource available for people researching the lives of their ancestors and the places of worship can play a significant role in family history.

I decided to use the abbreviated username here but you might notice the tinsel reference on a few sites around and about.

On the Scottish War Memorial Project we often post photographs of the church a memorial is situated within.

If you check out the Church sections of the forum you can see quite a few. This is the link to the Perthshire church section as an example

The database is now fully updated, listing not only the list of churches that have been photographed but also those which have a talk page too. Please have a browse through the collection, you might just find a picture of a rural church you have connections too.

Can anyone delving into their pictures find anything they may consider submitting to the project at all?

A small number of Glasgow and Edinburgh images are now online and in the last week or so quite a few Kirkcudbrightshire images have come in too along with some useful historical information to accompany many of the images.
