Any reason?
Whilst going through previous searches, i've noticed a lot of my rellies seemed to get married on the 31/12, last day of the year, would there be a reason for this?
Like starting a new life together in a new year, superstision, (spelling)!
Any ideas or just coincidence?
Thanks in advance
Susan.

As Aileen said, New Year's Day was the only holiday many workers got in a year, so to get married on Hogmany was simply the easiest option as well as the cheapest as that way they didn't lose pay.
Though even in the 60's it was more common to marry on a weekday evening - so nobody needed time off work to attend.

Way back then was the late 1960's - as I remember my Father going to work that day and he was a factory floor worker.way back then people even worked on Christmas day

I seem to remember that there was a tax reason for the Dec 31 marriage popularity. Something like, the couple would be taxed as a family for the entire year, as opposed to the higher taxation of two individuals, resulting in a nice tax rebate.I must be older than all the previous posters, or have a better memory. I suspect the former.

My parents and many of thier friends have wedding anniversaries before April the 5th - for the tax reasons I'm told.
Though I know it was also because Mum had finished her nurse's training and it was FORBIDDEN to be married as a student nurse!!!!
Again I'm talking mid 60's [though we were married in a March - but I don't think it made any difference

Hi Nancy, my wife( who, incidentally, went to school in Paisley) also thinks April was the tax deadline. So right now I am a minority of one.
