Re:Name of Adair

I wondered if anybody can help me as to the origin of the name ADAIR.
My grandmother was christened Maggie Adair Barclay and since then the
first born of each descendent has had the name Adair included.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Robertgoodlad,

According to the book "The Surnames of Ireland", Adair is a Scottish name prominent in Ulster. It is also occasionally an anglicized form of O Daire formerly in Offaly.

Hi,
Have you had any luck finding where the use of the name came in, in your family? One would assume it was a mother's maiden name at one point, but it could just as well have been a good friend, or the minister, doctor... or someone else!

All the best,
Sarah
