Could someone kindly explain what this encompasses?
I already have two of the three pre-1855 MI booklets for Fife. While fascinating, as far as my personal research is concerned they have proved of limited help.
Having learned the death date of an ancestor from somebody here with this index and finding I have a few more who died around the same period, I resolved to buy the index. That was months ago!
Now I want to follow this intention through but need some detail as to what I would get for approximately £16 and to know how much information is common to both sources.
Thanks in anticipation,
Mairi.

Hi Mairi
The CD ROM also deals with pre-1855 deaths. There are a good number of deaths in the CD ROM which are drawn from OPR records or newspaper entries, but I'm not sure of the proportions of MI to OPR to Newspapers and other sources. There is some overlap with the MI books, but there is a fair amount of data on the disk which is not from MI sources.
Unfortunately the blurb on their web site does not explain the content very clearly. http://www.fifefhs.org/ then go to Publications, then Fife Family History Society Death Index.
Best bet might be to contact Hugh Hoffman, whose contact details are given on that page, and he may be able to give you a breakdown of the content.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Mairi & Wilma
The Library in Edinburgh might be worth a phone call too...

I expect the Scottish Genealogy Society at Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh would be worth a try too. They probably sell the disk, and even if not, usually have these kind of resources for member and visitor use.

Hi Lesley and Wilma,
Thanks for your replies. I e-mailed the Scottish Genealogy Centre with this request some time before it closed for the Christmas break but have had no reply to date.
Have looked at the index in Cupar library via the computer and seen a few names but can't follow up. Am fairly housebound especially in winter.
Had hoped I might be able to make a trip to St. Andrew's last summer but did not manage it.
Am determined to get to Victoria Terrace when the weather is better. I enjoy their magazine and order booklets now and again but could do with a browse!
I will contact Hugh Hoffmann as I too could not find details of this CD other than cost.
Again thanks,
Mairi.

Hi Mairi
I visited the Scottish Genealogy Society on Victoria Terrace at the beginning of last September when I was in Edinburgh for a few days. They have quite a lot of the different MI booklets available for research and I know they had the one that covered Dunfermline and Aberdour as that was one of the ones I was interested in.
If you are able to visit in person then I would recommend it as they are very helpful. I also found quite a lot of other useful information while I was there - things I wasn't expecting to find - they have lots of fascinating books/papers and I could have spent hours and hours there!
Good luck.
Best wishes

Hi Claudette,
Yes I am really keen to get up to Victoria Terrace again. It is some years since I have been and there was a treasure trove then. Were I fit it is one of the places I would like to work in on a voluntary basis--alongside a National Trust or similar property, a library, a charity shop, a craft centre, and a garden centre or similar, etc.
